I always wanted to Know difference between scotch and whiskey

Answers:
Simply put...Scotch is a form of whisky (the Scots spell it without the 'e'). There are a bunch of kinds of whisk(e)y out there: Bourbon, Scotch, Irish, blended, malt, rye, etc. "Scotch" is short for "Scotch Whisky" which is whisky (made from malted barley) that is made and stored in wooden casks for at LEAST 3 years in Scotland. "Single Malt" means whisky that's made exclusively with malted barley at one distillery. "Blended" means it's a blend of malt whisky and grain spirits. No matter what it's made from, it can only be called "Scotch" if it comes from Scotland. That's really all there is.

Whiskey is a blend of malted spirit...while a schotch is usually a single malt.

Whiskey is the basis for the dark liquors, such as Irish Whiskey, Scotch, and Bourbon.

Scotch is Scotch Whiskey. In the fermenting process, it's a difference of the woods used, and the traditions used. This produces a different taste. However, as you may have noticed, different Scotches taste differently too.

To be called Scotch whisky the spirit must conform to the standards of the Scotch Whisky Order of 1990 (UK):

1. Must be distilled at a Scottish distillery from water and malted barley, to which only other whole grains may be added, have been processed at that distillery into a mash, converted to a fermentable substrate only by endogenous enzyme systems, and fermented only by the addition of yeast,
2. Must be distilled to an alcoholic strength of less than 94.8% by volume so that it retains the flavour of the raw materials used in its production,
3. Must be matured in Scotland in oak casks for no less than three years,
4. Must not contain any added substance other than water and caramel colouring, and
5. May not be bottled at less than 40% alcohol by volume.

No whisky other than Scotch whisky may be made in Scotland.

Scotch is distilled in Scotland and is spelled without the "e" whisky. Whiskey is a more broad cataory and includes scotch and also things like American bourbon.

it is a different type of alcohol and it is made different.

Even though I think using wikipedia to give answers is the cheap way out, I agree with Colin(i think that is his name above).

Similar to Champagne: If is not made in the Champagne region of France, it cannot be called Champagne. Same as Pinot Noir. It is called Burgandy in France. If is made anywhere else but Burgandy, it cant be called Burgandy.

Scotch is made in Scotland.

Scotch whisky is a blend of different aged whiskys.
Malt is made from one whisky age.
And bourbon is made from rye wheat.

their is also three types of spelling the Scottish spell it Whisky.
The Irish spell it whiskey.
The Yanks and the rest spell it Whiskie.

Scotch is spelled "whisky" and is made in pot stills over peat fires and usually aged.
Whiskey is grain alcohol, sometimes aged. Also called Canadian, Bourbon, or Irish.
