Its a greek sandwich with vegetables and it can come with chicken or meat.
It's very similiar to the Shawarma which is Middle eastern. The only difference is the Gyro is made with thick pita bread whereas the Shawarma is made with thin pita bread. Gyro sandwich is usually served like a taco but the shawarma is served like a wrap
A gyro is a Greek dish, consisting of meat, tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce, and is served with pita bread. Originally made our of lamb, many people now make gyros with chicken, or just vegetables.
