There are roughly two kinds of Japanese breakfast, traditional Japanese meal and western style breakfast.
In traditional Japanese meal, it contains rice, miso soup. Roast fish is often served as a main dish. Fresh egg, Nori (dried seaweed sheet), Natto (fermented soybeans) and pickles are also popular side dishes.
In western style breakfast, it consists of breads and softdrinks(coffee, black tea, milk or fruit juice).
Salad, Yogurt, egg(sunny side up, Omelet, scrambled eggs or boiled egg) and some meat(bacon or sausage) is usually served with them.
I think that the traditional Japanese style breakfast and the western style breakfast are almost about the same popularity. Some people eat cornflakes or rice porridge as breakfast.
At the heart of most meals are three basic bowls: rice, soup and a main dish. A traditional breakfast will contain a bowl of steamed rice, miso soup and grilled fish. They will be accompanied by side dishes of rolled omelet (tamagoyaki), pickles (tsukemono), natto and salad. The typical traditional breakfast beverage is green tea.
Western style breakfasts are also very popular now in Japan and these usually consist of toast, bacon or sausage, boiled or fried eggs and hash browns or chips. Breakfast cereals are also increasing in popularity.

I was travelling from Vancouver to Manila with a stopover in Tokyo. We need to stay in Hotel Nikko near the airport because the connecting flight leaves tommorow. Before we left next the morning we ate breakfast. They served asian style sausages with scrambled egg and orange juice for drinks.
