Lays chips?!ANY KIND OF CHIPS!?!
Answers:
Are you concerned about all animal products hidden in unsuspected food, or just pork products in particular?
Anyway, good question and one I would like to know the answer to myself. So I did a search on Google, and found the following on the U.S. Frito Lays website :
QUOTE : The enzymes used in the cheese making process for some of the cheese seasoning used in Frito-Lay products may come from an animal source. For those individuals looking to avoid all animal enzymes, Frito-Lay offers a wide variety of snack choices that do not contain enzymes from animal sources. UNQUOTE :
So cheese and onion crisps would contain animal products and would not be Vegetarian/Vegan in the true sense of the word.
They have a list (pertains only to products made and distributed in the U.S. Products sold in other countries under similar brands may be made using slightly different recipes and ingredients to accommodate local needs and preferences) of pork free products. However, remember that being on the pork free list does not mean that the product may not contain other animal products, and this is one issue that Lays does not address on their American website at least.
List can be found here : http://www.fritolay.com/your-health/us-p…
From what I can tell, in the UK a few years ago it was discovered that Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps, which most vegetarians were eating actually contained Gelatine, which generally speaking contains PIG but could contain other animal products. Surprisingly at the same time it was discovered that Smokey Bacon flavoured crisps, which were ignored by vegetarians, did NOT contain any Gelatine!!! After loads of complaints from vegetarians and other consumer groups, the law was changed and Walkers crisps (as well as other food items), now tell the consumer, with writing on the packaging whether it is suitable for vegetarians.
So, depending on whether you are in the U.S., U.K. or some other country, some of their crisps may or may not be suitable for vegetarians or vegans. I would recommend that you search with Google for information as I found lists of stuff suitable for vegetarians and vegans, but it is not possible to copy everything here for you. I am putting some links below and you can check them out for the information.
BTW, crisps are not the only product with hidden animal products where you would not normally expect them. Some time ago there was shock that Mars bars and other chocolate snacks were no longer vegetarian. After public pressure, some retractions were done, however not all the products were changed. So if you are particular about what is in your food, then you need to research more on your own.

hi im not sure but i believe most potato chips do not use animal fats. by the way avoid macdonalds fries as i heard they use beef essence. and i remember seeing my vegetarian friend eating KFC mashed potatoes, and only a few years later i realised the mushroom sauce is actually chicken skin boiled into a thick gravy with mushroom (chicken mushroom gravy). so be really really careful.
my elder sister worked in KFC as part-time before, and witnessed everything in the kitchen.
for the macdonalds fries, i remember reading it from a book titled "Fast Food Nation".
No Animal fat in Lays/Walkers/Whatever the rest of the world calls them - even the Chicken and Beef flavours have no meat in them! Sunflower oil is the most commonly used oil
Lays are vegan, so you are okay :)
