Dutch oven, what is it? What does it look like?!

Question: Dutch oven, what is it? What does it look like?
I read about it in recipes, and may even have one without knowing it, but how do I know that's what it is? I'm not Dutch. Would somebody please enlighten me?

It is just a heavy pot.
Check out Le Creuset online. They are one of many great mfgs of dutch ovens.
They call theirs "french ovens"! They are usually between 4 and 8 qts, and heavy, usually cast iron or thick aluminum with a nice heavy lid, so you can basically cook a stew on the stove without having to put it in the oven like the old days.

A Dutch oven is a large (6 quart is the most common size for some reason), heavy weight cooking vessel with a tight fitting lid. Can be cast iron, ceramic or stainless steel. Cast iron or stainless would be my choice because you can use them on the stove top and in the oven providing the handles are not plastic. Can be used on the grill to cook or heat up side dishes also.

Great for any of those long and slow simmered soups, stews. Great in the oven for pot roast! You don't have to spend mega money on one; Le Cruset is usually pretty expensive, Lodge makes a great cast iron one that is more budget friendly. Lodge has been making quality cast iron cookware for well over 100 years.

Before you get people telling you that it means farting in bed with your head under the blankets... ;)

In terms of cooking, a Dutch oven is a great big cast-iron pot with a lid.

Like French fries and Canadian bacon, a Dutch oven is not really Dutch.

Do a web search for Dutch oven and you'll find plenty of pictures. It is a large, heavy pot. That can help it hold heat, which can be good for searing meat.

Ha. You made my night.
