About the origin of dumplings, there are several.

According to common belief, Japanese dipomatic bring eight different Tou cake (唐菓子), duing Nara period (奈良時代 AD 710 to 794) back to Japan. Later on one of the Tou cake call shitogi ( しとぎ) was use as a gift to god during the new year. (chinese use it during Duanwu Festival, so the fish will not eat the body of the hero (Qu Yuan) who die on the river), what is the prototype of the round balls,

The name "Dango" was first written in Heian period (平安時代, AD 794 to 1185) and in cook book during the late Kamakura Period (鎌倉時代 AD 1185–1333). It is not until Muromachi period (室町時代 AD 1333 to 1573) the "shitogi" / "tou cake" first appeared on a bamboo skewers. It is said it not until this era different form of dango emerge.

by Edo period (江戸時代 AD 1603 to 1868), the steet venda start making a sweet dumpling (better know as Mitarashi dango today), it also become a favor to use during the tea ceremony and picnic, In the rural areas it have become a basic stape for rice farmer and it also was eaten as emergy food.
