How long does a watermelon stay good?
My friend bought one about 2 weeks ago and has not cut it yet. Would it still be good?

She is at work and wants to know if she should buy a new one on her way home from work. She can't cut it open if she is not at home.

Watermallon sours pretty quickly. If it is a whole one I would cut into it pretty soon. If it is on that has been pre cut, i would toss it. You can smell it and if it has a sour smell dont eat it and it will also have a slimy coating on it if it has went bad.

I just had to throw one out that was a week and a half old. (pre-cut)
if it still firm and doesn't smell or taste weird
hmmm maybe you should look in it????
probably not. cut it open and see!
Actually uncut watermelon goes bad pretty fast (6-8 days). Check out the website below for more food storage tips.
the only way to know for sure is to cut it and see if it has that funny look in the rind and the flesh is mushy. if it's been in the frig, it should be ok since it hasn't been cut. i wouldn't wait too much longer. once cut it needs to be consumed within a few days or else it starts to get mushy and lose flavor.
that reminds me, i have one in my frig i bought on either sat or sun that i need to cut also.
If it was not in the fridge, then I doubt it will be good. It may not even be good it it was in the fridge. You will know by the smell immediately when you cut it open. It won't have a rotten smell, but it won't smell fresh.
