I live in Thailand, and every year look forward to durian season because I love durian. To me, durian is the fruit in heaven if there's a heaven and if fruit is eaten in heaven.
OK, it has that strong smell, true, and some people can't get past that. The fruit of durian - the meat that you eat - is sweet and creamy, and may have a little of that smell, but it's not unpleasant at the eating stage. The taste is sort of like vanilla custard, very sweet, very rich. Durian is high in calories because, like avocadoes, it's high in fat. But that gives it that rich creamy taste and texture.
There are different kinds of durian, but the favored one in Thailand in called MONTONG durian. It has more and more- delicious meat surrounding the pits. A durian that you get in the USA will possibly be a cheaper, less-delicious kind of durian, and it will have been frozen and shipped a long distance, so when you try it it will be far from its peak flavor and condition, and maybe it wasn't all that high-quality to begin with. To make things even worse, while the lovely flavor and sweetness suffer from freezing, long-distance shipping, and age, the stink stays the same.
The best durians are fresh from the tree, or eaten soon after picking.
I started out hating durian because my first durian experience was when I tried a durian shake in Boston at a Vietnamese restaurant that was so awful I couldn't finish it. But now, after trying the good stuff, durian is my favorite fruit.
Here in Thailand durian is highly esteemed. There are even special expressions in Thai language that are used only when buying durian!
