Why do people like spicy food?!

Question: Why do people like spicy food?
My question is actually more specific than that.

I remember hearing once that the sensation we get when we eat spicy food is actually a chemical burn happening to the flesh in our mouths, causing pain, and the spicier you like food to be, the more you enjoyed the endorphin rush of that pain. Basically I was told that the more people like spicy food, the more masochistic they tend to be. I'm aware that each case is different, I'm just trying to see if there is any factual basis to this.

Some cultures have spicy food because the spicy food eaten actually helps them stay cooler. (I'd be ashamed to say "there's spicy then there's stupid" when millions of people like the so-called 'stupid' version.) Louisiana is famous for spicy food, as is Mexico and Vietnam. Some Chinese is very spicy and you will starve in South Korea if you can't take the food heat. These are all very hot places. I like food from subtle Thanksgiving fare to the 'stupid spicy.' The flavor of the spicy peppers and the hot spices is good. The taste lingers and is pleasant.

In my opinion garlic or onion aren't classed as a spice.
Also the person who said theres spicy and theres stupid should know that everyone has different levels of how spicy they can handle their food so just cus you think its stupid doesnt necessarily mean it is.

i have had spicy food all my life and im sure my tongue is fine!

So why do people like spicy food? Some people enjoy their food spicier and some dont. For some people spicy food means tasty food as opposed to bland food.

I agree with the person who said "there's spicy then there's stupid" ... I agree with your masochistic statement in regards to the three-alarm chili, and those peppers they are now cross-breeding to pretty much light on fire soon as they hit a grill (ok...slight exageration) ... I never cared for spicy foods at all. I do, however, enjoy certain spices. Garlic, onion, etc... but just enough so there's a hint of the flavor.

Well, there's spicy, and then there's stupid.

Even though I don't like it all that hot, spicy food still tastes good.

However, most chile-heads just love the heat, but most super spicy things don't have any taste whatsoever - they're just after that burn.

Depends on the spices! Some spices enhance the flavour of the food; others are disgustingly sickening.

Cuz it's freakin awesome....
