In chinese cooking, is shaoshing rice wine different from dry sherry?!

Yes, I agree with the above answer. Shaoshing wine has its own distinct flavour with the closest substitute being sherry for the sweet flavour. I sometimes use Japanese mirin when I don`t have any as this is a sweet rice wine but nothing comes close to Shaoshing wine for that authentic flavour and taste for Chinese cooking.

Yes, the taste is definitely different, but if it's all you have on hand it will work. It's the closest substitute you can find to rice wine.
I have never tasted sherry however shaoshing has a sweet, earthy taste. It's the closest substitute, however shaoshing would always be my first choice.
