Cesar dressing vegetarian?!

Question:

Cesar dressing vegetarian?

I know that some ceaser dressings contain anchovie paste or flavoring. Would this still be considered a vegetarian food? I'm not sure if anchovie paste is made with real anchovies or not. Also if it isn't vegetarian can you give me a vegetarian recipe. Thanks in advance.

Answers:
Technically its not vegetarian, because fish is the flesh of an "animal" and anchovies are fish and anchovy paste is made of..you guessed it...anchovies! You can however find vegan Caesar dressing at the natural food market or look on-line for a recipe, like this one...

*Caesar Vinaigrette*

4 - 8 cloves garlic, pressed (to your own taste)
2 t red wine vinegar
4 t balsamic vinegar
2 T fresh lemon juice
1 t dry mustard
1/4 t cayenne/hot sauce (optional)
2 t soy sauce/tamari
1/2 c hot water
2 t chicken-flavored broth powder
1/4 t veggie-flavored broth powder
1/8 t salt, or salt-free seasoning
fresh cracked pepper
1/4 c nutritional yeast

Mix, bottle and keep refrigerated.

It's not vegetarian...it's made with fish. Have a nice vinagrette or ranch instead.

There are generally anchovies in it...so if you are a veggie who eats fish (some people do others don't) then its fine, if not, then no anchovies. it's a personal choice.

Since it uses anchovie paste, it's still got some anchovies in it. Depends on if you're a vegetarian that eats fish or not, as to whether you would consider it vegetarian. I would say that it's not.

As for a recipe, I haven't heard of any that isn't made with anchovies. You should stick with italian or ranch dressing.

Anchovy paste is just mashed up anchovies and it also contains egg.

I found this recipe online at kraftfoods.com I like it because it is quick and easy. since most of the ingredients are found in your cupboard.

1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup water
3 Tbsp. KRAFT 100% Grated Parmesan Cheese
2 Tbsp. GREY POUPON Dijon Mustard
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

BLEND lemon juice, vinegar, water, cheese, mustard, garlic powder and pepper in small bowl. Cover.
REFRIGERATE for up to 1 week. Serve as a dressing for salad greens.

You can find vegetarian caesar dressing and worcestershire sauce (also normally made with anchovies) in some specialty grocery stores or natural food stores. They achieve a similar flavor using tamarind instead of anchovy.

There are ones you can find that are vegetarian, but they're hard to come across. If you're looking for vegan then it may be impossible. lol

Almost always non-vegetarian. Yes, anchovy paste is made with real anchovies. But even if the dressing doesn't contain anchovy paste as an ingredient, Worcestershire sauce is almost always in Ceasar dressing, and it's not veggie either.
