"Smashed" in our family means to add liquor to the sweet potatoes..."smashed potatoes".
You can use a potato masher. It's one of those things with a handle about 8 to 10 inches long. On the end of the handle, there are 4 or 5 thin grates similar to those found on a grill, but are about 4 inches in length and width.
Or you can put the food in a food processor or blender.
Or, you can put the food in a plastic bag and then smash the outside of the bag with a rolling pin or hammer.
Take your food out with you for a night on the razz. Get it absolutely plastered and then it would be smashed.
Hopefully by this time you'll be smashed too and the conversations you could then have with a tin of ravioli and a kit kat chunky would be hilarious.
:-D
Alcohol ;-)
"Smashed" as in smashed potatoes means the same as mashed. I giggled the first time I heard it. I think it's a British term.
Potatoes, yams, and squash can all be mashed. Cut them up into cubes, boil until soft, and then mash them. If you like them lumpy you can use a potato masher or a large fork; if you like them smoothly whipped you can use an electric mixer or a food processor.
Depends on what you are smashing
If you are smashing a garlic clove, then the flat side of a chef's knife is best. If you are talking about potatoes, then a potato masher is best. For tomatoes, I prefer to break them up by hand.
Dunno about smashing food, but you can mash it with a masher.
You can smash a glass, but you mash food.
I have always referred smashed foods, like spuds where the chunks of potatoes are broken up but not completely mashed.
(perhaps it's just me)
