Who says you can't have "soul food" at a formal dinner?
I suggest writing them and asking them personally. Probably both because you'd have to be out of your mind to not like like soul food and live in the U.S. but as another commenter stated, A) Barack Obama is not Southern and B) Michelle Obama is concerned with childhood obesity. Given soul food is not known for being light on calories, I'd guess they probably steer clear of it more than not.
Additionally, you're the one who presupposed a racial component to their choice in food, so I think anyone who goes "racial" on you is perfectly entitled to. By asking people not to, you indicated that you're aware of this as well.
Southern white person who loves soul food and has a distaste for ignorance
it really depend what he feel like, and even thought he have a lot of kitchen staff 24-7, he do have to pay for what he and his family eat when dine in privite. The kitchen are for the entire white house, they do not serve the Prisident only, so it the first familt want fired chiken tonight, they get fried chicken, if they want a ten course meal, they got it.
But when POTUS is working, his "bookbag"/"bodyman" (Personal aide to the Prisident) will be the one order the food. Some even believe the aide required to know more about POTUS's mood/like/dislike then their wife. Beside daily job duty, on call 24--7, their "hidden" job also include help senior staff decided "what to/not to asked", have food/drink ready @ the right time in order to help relex POTUS.
One the other hand all the white house function (which are pay by our tax $), the state department are the one decide the guide line, then it is up to the head chef to create the menu with multi option for each course, afteword it will sent back to state department & foreign embassy(if needed) for approveful. Once is done it will sent to the first lady (yes the first lady not the POTUS) for the final approvful (she will be the one who pick the final menu since part of her main job is White House (american) image). Even though she may talk to President in private, but gerenally speaking, Prisident have not say in it what so ever.
his favourite food is Chili and then a cobbler. He likes to go to an Italian restaurant and has pasta or thin crust pizza.His fav. Thanksgiving dishes are turkey and pumpkin pie

As Michele Obama is an advocate for ending childhood obesity and with 2 kids, the Obamas should have a very healthy menu. BTW they have a whole team of chef and cook planning and cooking for them. See the following for information:
