Differences:
1) Texture - Oysters will be noticeably softer. Oysters will have a creamier interior too; when eaten raw, oysters could be slimy. Clams will be more chewy and the clam belly won't be as thick as oysters. In general, larger shell fish of the same specie will be tougher and chewier than the smaller ones. This can not be applied to oysters; their texture will remain similar even if there's a major difference in size.
2) Moisture content - Oysters will have a noticeably higher moisture content on the inside. Larger, fatter oysters will have higher moisture content.
3) Taste - Oysters got an unique taste/scent. The unique scent is very noticeable.
4) Shell - Oysters for a thick shell with a flaky exterior. The exterior and the interior of an oyster shell is not very uniform. If you tap the shell with a hammer - Clam shells will crack. Oyster shells will chip first then crack.
Similarities:
1) They are both shell fish.
2) There are freshwater and saltwater species for both.
3) They could both trigger allergic reactions.
Hi: I'm from the NE too and it's all a matter of taste. I love steamer clams and minced surf clams (esp in chowder), along with scallops and shrimp, but I can't stand oysters or mussels. Try just one oyster before you order a bunch, because they do not taste anything like clams.
Me
They are very much the same for cooking, but have different tastes.
They are both shell fish.

I've had both fried clams and fried oysters. The flavors aren't hugely different; instead the biggest difference is the consistency; fried oysters are creamy and tender inside, but fried clams are more chewy/toothsome. They're both good but they are different.
the are similar in that clams and oysters are both shell fish, and in that they are both fried. as to a difference in taste or texture i will leave that to you to decide
what is the difference between fried chicken and fried turkey? Both are poultry.
