a spongy looking bread roll., cooked on a griddle and divine with butter and honey:

They taste ALMOST like a Belgium waffle (the ones made with yeast).
They LOOK like a REALLY fat pancake that hasn't been flipped but has been cooked through, smooth and almost crunchy on the bottom and like a sponge on top. Usually about 2.5cm (or 1 inch) thick.
My husband puts marmite on them (He's a Kiwi, they put it on everything!) and eats them like a piece of toast. I forgive him this sacrilege because I love him.
The BEST way to eat them is to lather them with real butter and a sweet syrup(honey, golden or maple are best) while still hot and let it soak in, then pull it apart with your fingers(or cut it with knife and fork if you don't like sticky fingers!) and suck the sweetness out of the spongy side then pop it in your mouth and chew!
It's hard to describe them, but they are SOO yummy and an institution in most of the British colonies!
Commonly found in England, and here in the states at some grocery stores, in the refridgerated section.
In answer to your question:
It looks like an English muffin, however the texture and taste is a little spring-ier. Eat it the same as an English Muffin, at butter and or jam or lemon curd.
Personal Exp.
I used to live in England, and one of the BEST things next to a pims cookie was the Crumpet. Often had with tea, a Crumpet is similar to an English Muffin, but not the same at all. They are so soft and indescribable. They are the best. If ever you visit England, you HAVE to try one!
A crumpet /?kr?mp?t/ ( listen) is a savoury/sweet bread snack made from flour and yeast. It is eaten mainly in the United Kingdom and other nations of the Commonwealth.
