Should kiwi fruits be eaten with the skin & is it good for you?!

Question:

Should kiwi fruits be eaten with the skin & is it good for you?

One of the Aussie girls at work said kiwi fruits should be eaten with the skin. To prove it she ate one in front of us. Is this true because no one in England ever eats a kiwi like that. We tend to slice them up or scoop out the fruit with a spoon.

Answers:
I don't eat the skin (i eat mine like a boiled egg, cut the top off and eat the fruit from the middle) If your workmate eats the skin then she can but i wouldn't, it's all hairy and tough!

I found this from Wikipedia -

Kiwifruit can be eaten whole, like an apple (including the skin, which increases the tartness) the skin is a good source of flavonoid antioxidants, cut in half and eaten like a passion fruit or peeled and sliced, like a pineapple. For people who prefer not to eat the skin, the fruit can be cut in half and then the flesh scooped out with a spoon.

When she has baked beans on toast does she eat the can as well?

Yes, like you, I used to always scoop out the flesh to eat but it is perfectly ok to eat the whole fruit, skin and all. However, it is very coarse and may not be to your taste.

As far as i know its edible..

I've eaten kiwis since I can remember but never with the skin on & have never heard of that either. They are very good for the digestion & keeping you regular to the loo. Lots of people use them in the S**T yourself thin diet. So too many per day are not highly recommended.

Some people are allergic to the skin...my Dad ate a small piece of skin once and had this major allergic reaction to it. He had difficulty breathing and rashes all over. It was pretty bad...so i suggest best not to eat it with the skin...

I eat them with the skin, mainly because I can't be bothered to peel them. I'm the only one I know who does this.

i never eat the skin horrible

My Kiwi friends don't eat the skins (too hairy) but they do eat them as a savoury - sprinkled with salt and black pepper - on a salad platter.

It is fine to eat the skin, like a peach, but not necessary. There are loads of vitamins inside. But if you can tolerate it, and don't want to peel it, you can eat the whole fruit. Yes, I have proof:

i have always eaten the skins off kiwis. Doesnt bother me at all.

Aussies tend to be brash.

In New Zealand, the yellow variety of Kiwi fruit, which is much sweeter, are sold in punnets with a yellow plastic spoon shaped especially to allow full extraction of the pulp from the skin. You wouldn't then eat the skin on it's own would you?

So,I guess I'll go with the Kiwis since it is called Kiwifruit

I have seen someone do it that, she is the only person I have seen eat the skin .must taste awful.

If you can bare the rough texture of the skin, it will be very healthy for you to eat it that way, however, be sure to wash before you eat, as it could have some pesticide on it.
