A laddu is any Indian sweet that is in the shape of a ball. It can be made from any or a combination of the following -

Whole Wheat flour
Wheat flour
Milk solids
Chickpea flour
Semolina
Dry Fruits
Rice crispies
Coconut

It is eaten on special celebratory events as well as festivals in India.

Usually made from besan (ground chickpea flour) with ghee and sugar, mixed with dry fruits like sultanas and nuts like pistachios. The besan is first lightly fried in a bit of ghee (clarified butter) until it gives off a lovely aroma.
