As a teenager, do you buy your own food from groceries?!

Question: As a teenager, do you buy your own food from groceries?
I was just wondering. I've been buying food from grocery stores for both myself and my siblings. I don't get any allowances. I pay for most of my own things.
I'm also pressured to buy things by my step mom (She literally picks things out and just insist that I buy them for her saying that we need it.)
How was/is it for you guys?
P.S. I'm in highschool and I'm poor.

Perhaps you would like to read you question again and tell us where you get the money to buy the food.

I use my own money or money from the kitty jar.

I did a lot of the shopping, but back then we charged everything and I guess my mom paid at the end of the week.
Where are you getting the money to pay for the groceries? You didn't mention anything about a job or being forced to use your allowance. If you are working and being forced to supply food for your entire family and there is other money coming in (either from your step mother or your Dad) you need to speak to school guidance counselor, call your local CPS or DPS (child protection services) or find an adult relative to intervene with your parents. This is just wrong, I can't even think of any unusual circumstances that would force a child to do this. If the parents or mentally ill, alcoholics or drug addicts, you and your siblings should be living elsewhere. The are endangering the welfare of minors. If they are disabled they should be collecting disability and money is generally build in for the children. Have they not heard of food stamps and SSI?

Its really not normal for you to buy groceries for your household, nor does your step-mom have any business relying on you for purchases! That is just appalling, and I've really never heard of this before. Why doesnt your dad give her money for groceries? Why dont you bring this to his attention. It is his job to provide for his family, and we're talking about the basics, like food.

The next time she insists you buy groceries, say its not your job or place to do so. ask your dad for a weekly allowance solely to make food purchases. You are NOT responsible, please realize that.

i didn't grow up with alot of money either, i went to grocery store once or twice but I felt awkward at first because I felt like every one was looking at me, especially when I would cart around with generic brands to save money. Its ok, you get used to shopping and realize people are more focused on their own groceries and not yours. :)
