Can someone describe the difference of flavours in these 3 similar looking breads?!
Japanese Melon Pan (Melon Bread)
Hong Kong Bolo Bao (Pineapple Bun)
I've tried the Japanese and Hong Kong ones but I've never had a Concha

Mexican Conchas (Shell Sweet Roll) - The bread is the driest among the three. The bread is also the heaviest and densest of the three. The texture... the outside is somewhat "sandy". The bread inside is soft but it will not feel as "spongy" as the other two. When you sink your teeth into it, there's not much "bouncing back" (as if you were chewing on a dinner bun) and your teeth will cut right though it. Conchas is also the least sweet bread of the three. If you ask me, this is the least tasty bread of the three. I've tried two different types of conchas and I'm not that thrilled.
Japanese Melon Pan (Melon Bread) - I only tried the basic version which doesn't taste like melon at all. If I remembered correctly, the taste in general is similar to the basic Hong Kong style bolo bao but Melonpan got a stronger hint of powered milk.
Hong Kong Bolo Bao (Pineapple Bun) - Hong Kong bolo bao probably got the most different varieties. Some came with fillings in them. The usual egg custard one is real nice. The shredded coconut one isn't too bad also. The one with char-siu pork filling is unconventional and very interesting. One of the common serving style in Hong Kong cafe's is slicing open the basic version bolo bao open and stuffing a nice chunk of butter into the bread. Oily but tasty.
If you got a chance, try Taiwan style bolo bao too. The bread got a slight more chew to it and the moisture seemed to be a little higher too. The outer crust is slightly different too; it's softer and flakes off easier. Personally, I like the basic Taiwan version better than the basic Hong Kong version.
Melon bread, bolo bao, and conchas look the same but they do taste different but its a small difference. In melon bread you can taste a little melon in it while the bolo bao you can taste a little pineapple. While conchas are pretty much the same but with no special flavors to it.
