cut it off the cob long ways with a knife and eat it with a fork

This is how to eat corn CLEAN off the cob with nothing but your teeth and your hands:
You need to 'chisel' out the corn, one row at a time with just either your upper teeth or lower teeth. I prefer to use my four lower front teeth. To get started, you might need to take a normal bite, but it is possible to start without clearing an area. With an area clear however, it's easier to get 'mowing'. If you're using your lower teeth, you'll want to start with the area above clear of kernels. Dig your lower teeth in, and twist the cob with your hands. The twist action should be against the teeth, essentially scooping the kernels up with just your 2-4 frontmost teeth. This should allow you to remove the kernels cleanly into your mouth. Be sure to continue with the entire row, and move downwards (if using lower set of teeth) with the next row once you've cleared the first one. Repeat until you've successfully cleared the entire cob of kernels -- in a nice, clean way.

Personal experience.

Ray M. got it right! When the cob is cool enough, hold it perpendicular to your plate and "saw" the kernels off with preferably a serrated steak knife. Delish. Also a good why for making succotash.
