Dave, all depends upon ur room temperature and the conditions of the atmosphere in which u r trying to keep.
The higher the temperature it is more likely that the Yogurt would get sour quicker than in colder temperatures.
I have seen yogurt turning sour with in six hours in tropical day climate and being good up to 16 hours in northern Canada during early spring or late winter. So, if some one guarantees you with exact numbers then he must be doing either of the two 1. kidding 2. guessing. All the sourness is due to the formation of yeast and this yeast needs favorable conditions. if u could get the conditions that you are in now, we would probably be able to work out some number which would be close to actual. Keep enjoying ur yogurt drinking.

I wouldn't ever have yogurt that hasn't been refrigerated!! It's refrigerated at the store, right?

not very long. Lots of spores in the air find a nice home with lots of food in a container of unsealed yogurt.
