Do you dig in the back of the refrigerator cases for the freshest stuff?!

Question:

Do you dig in the back of the refrigerator cases for the freshest stuff?

In case you didn't know, grocery stores practice something called "back stock." This means they put the freshest stuff in the back so that people will take the older stuff first, less waste, etc. Ever since I worked in a grocery store and learned this bit of knowledge, I only buy perishables from the back and double check the date to be absoluteley sure that it's the freshest. The bagged lettuce I pulled from the back of the shelf at wal mart today expires a whole week later than what was at the front. Am I the only one who does this?

Answers:
I always "look to the back"~
Groceries cost enough these days without them spoiling too soon~
I always pull milk from the back~
I am an obsessive date reader~
Even pop/soda has dates which I was not aware of until recently~
I try to buy anything fresh I can get my hands on~!~
And yes bagged lettuce/salad makes a big difference in date~

no , I use to work in an A&P so I know this trick too
& I do it as long as no one is watching ( no other shoppers)

only for the milk, cuz a couple times i didnt look anfd the milk we bought was expired on the day we bought it. it was disgusting

You're not alone. I always go to the back, especially for milk and other dairy products.

No you are not the only one, I especially do that w/ milk

No. I join you in shame. Others staring at you thinking you're mad, not knowing they're NOT all the same...

Years of retail and rotating product is the cause.

My friend (former warehouse manager) actually writes the date of purchase on the tops of her canned goods when she puts them away so she can make sure she uses the oldest first.

We are a sick, sick bunch.

I grab from the back too...

Milk and cheese especially.

I once bought salad dressing that was expired.

That was enough for me.

I am a date checker big time!!!

I do that. Look for the date, choose one from the back that has the latest date.

if i have time, i do it, but the store is usually so busy and i don't want to be discourteous, so i just take from whatever is closest.
