Who out there loves NUTS - specifically pistachios?!

Question: Who out there loves NUTS - specifically pistachios?
Last night I went to Sams, and bought a huge 4 pound bag. I shouldn't have done it, as it is one of my favorite snack foods I can't stop eating.
I just consumed about 200 of them in one sitting, and you should see the pile of shells here.

So, do you think the shells would be good in the compost pile? It seems they would be good for aerating the soil in the garden, and I hate to waste them.

Remember when they used to be dyed red, and your fingers would get all stained eating them? I guess they finally stopped dying them for health reasons, though I don't know why they ever dyed them in the first place.

So, what would you do with all those shells, - make a collage? A Christmas decoration?

What are your thoughts about it. Please. I am terribly bored!

Answers:

Well, as to what to do with the shells, i heat my house with wood. Nut shells are high in oil and calories, so I burn them. During the summer, all organic stuff goes in the compost pile.
As for why they used to dye them? Sometimes they come off the tree very discolored. The outside shell when it is drying sometimes stains the shell. They dyed them to make them all uniform. I actually have a tree and eat them fresh.
I love them too.

OMG.. we are a nut loving family..
We live in the middle east.. nuts are the thing here... You wont find anyone who hosts a party that doesnt have some sort of a bowl of nuts set out..
and the nuts here are to die for.. so fresh..
Pistachios are the major thing here in the middle east.. but that doesnt mean we dont eat others..
I love all nuts.. my fav are macadamia.. but I love em all.. brazil nuts, pecan, walnuts, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pistachios, ..... and I like seeds also.. right now.. im on unsalted roasted pumpkin seeds... they are lower in fat than pistachios.. so I feel a bit less guilty.. and you have to shell them. so the amount you end up eating is less than the pile of shells.. hahahaha.

I used to love them when they were red. I always got those ones cause they made my hands and mouth red. Yeah I made a mess. My mom would get so mad at me. It was a blast. It was fun being a kid. Now that I am an adult I am pretty happy that they don't do that any more.

Hey stick those shells in some food coloring and make like a mosaic collage. That'd be cool. Well good luck.

Haha. I remember eating bagfuls of the dyed pistachios when I was a kid! Do they not dye them anymore? I haven't seen them. Sure, you could make a collage or Christmas decoration. Hmmmm, I don't know. Are you still bored? Lol. I'm bored too.

Hi: They would make good mulch. BTW if you really love pistachios - try this site: NutsOnline.com
They sell these turkish Antep pistachios that are amazing! Expensive, but worth it if you love them. They're the only ones I'll eat. Happy crunching!!

Me

You are like me; I can't just eat a few pistachios or a few cashews; I have to eat the whole bagful, and they must be salted.

I am not that keen on them, I like cashews or walnuts more.

I would put them in the compost, ot use in a pebble garden LoL

All I can tell you is pistachios are the best :)

As for the shells, sorry no idea, compost would be good,

I love nuts, especially the Theo Hutchcraft variety ;) <3 xxxxxxxxx

I like berries better...

Just eat them

I must admit pistachios are amazing. They aren't bad fresh of the tree either, if you ever get the chance it's worth trying. Since you like pistachios so much why don't you try making pistachio butter here's a recipe http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/000…

As for what to do with the shells here's an idea:
---Use them at the bottom of plant pots to help drainage
---They can be made into rattles (in an old tin can or cardboard tube depending on how loud you want it) or instead of seashells wind chimes.
---Smash them up a bit and spread them around the garden – to start with, the sharp edges will deter slugs and snails and eventually the shells will break down into compost and feed your soil.
---Shell-like chunky bracelet
---Filling for a bean bag
---Put them on the fire
---Christmas wreaths
