Remember that Mar's candy media controversy?!
Remember that Mar's candy media controversy?
I remember how big a deal it was for..like 3 days. I remember also reading someone saying something along the lines of "I bet it was just a publicity stunt - to bring awareness to vegetarians that mar's products are vegetarian."
I thought that was sort of extreme, till a few coincidental things happened.
We were shopping at safeway late one night for a few necessary things and I noticed a vegan or two product in there freezer section. It said it was made by "seeds of change." I never had heard of this company before then. Didn't think too much of it other then I thought it was probably a company owned by Safeway and part of there whole organics/health advertising stunt.
Then I was reading a site Katie showed me listing the different parent companies of most the organic/vegan product makers and noticed seeds of change next to mars. That's when I recalled the entire animal rennet controversy.

So it turns out seeds of change..is owned by mars. Not sure how it entirely correlates, but maybe its part of a greater joint company scheme also?
"I don't think there are any real differences between Seeds of Change and Mars.... whether it's a Mars product or it's a Seeds of Change product, the product benefits are very, very similar if we're talking about nutrition here." Seeds of Change Vice President Steve French, to Food & Water magazine, quoted in Earth Island Journal, Fall 1998. (Glover, 2003).
Does anyone else have any insight to this correlation? Or am I just grabbing at air?

I only vaguely know what you're talking about, but the last things I have read is that most Mars candy is NOT vegan because it contains whey. Candy bars are bad for you anyway! :P
But anyway, as for big companies buying up interest in organic foods companies, my take is that if the big companies are paying attention then we are on the verge of big change in the foods industry. If they see there is money to be made by making healthier food then they'll make more and market more and bring those foods more to the general public. The more mainstream organic food gets the better it is for everyone, as long as they don' t keep playing fast and loose with the term. I buy a lot of my organic produce from Ralphs when I can't get to the farmers market and the produce guy there said he throws most of it away because no one buys it. That is a really bad way to get a grocery chain like Ralphs to keep stocking organic stuff! So, I'm sort of rambling, but my point is that if we show the big companies that there is a need to offer healthier food choices then maybe we can turn the tide here and eventually they'll stop using crap ingredients and help the masses be a little healthier. How awesome would it be if their organics and vegetarian lines started outselling thier crap lines? I think we should keep pushing for big business to cater to our needs. I don't mind giving them my money if it shows them there's a need for better food.
So they just did it for publicity?
