Trying not to eat Beef...any advice?!

Question:

Trying not to eat Beef...any advice?

Since seeing a chicken being hand slaughtered...I wont touch it (it's wings flap...ewww.....I think i just threw up in my mouth) also I have some health concerns about eating things that eat other things.

I don't eat chicken, eggs, most seafood (except halibut, shrimp, crab and lobster), pork, lamb, goat or any other thing except beef. I eat beef because I have some Iron issues...some serious iron issues that I'm afraid that abstinence of beef will mess me up.

...any suggestions? I'm looking for iron substitutes.

Answers:
Well, there's 2 types of iron: heme and nonheme iron. Unfortunately, heme iron comes from animal meat (good sources are beef, chicken, and clams). It does absorb into your system better than nonheme iron which comes from plant based sources such as grains, spinach, brocoli, chard, and mustard/collard greens. So, those are all good iron sources. You can actually get some iron in your food from cooking in a cast iron skillet. You can also increase your absorption of nonheme iron by consuming vitamin C at the same time. (good sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and peppers)

Try to limit yourself when drinking tea, coffee, and milk. Tea and coffee contain what are called tannins. They can decrease your iron absorption. The calcium and phosphorus in milk can also decrease your absorption of iron. (just don't completely deprive yourself of calcium because you obviously need it for your bones)

If you want, you can take an iron supplement.

beans, legumes, nuts?

Of course, go to a pharmacy and get different kinds of iron bottles, some have extra iron, and other things. You also need protein, and soy bean are very good for you. Keep up with Vegiterian, you are making the animals feel a little safer.

Spinach

take an iron substitute, red meat sits in your gut for a long timer before being processed and digested

Well, it's not meat, but beans are a great source of iron. Also soy meat. My mom uses soy meat as a substitute for red meat, and she loves it! I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian myself. After you see how all the slaughtering is done, makes you think twice, doesn't it? Not talking about the hormones and other horrible stuff they put in meat and poison our bodies.

fresh soy beans are awesome, but I eat some chicken.

"I have some health concerns about eating things that eat other things"

I have news for you. Everything you eat, eats other things. Life feeds on life feeds on life. When you die, you will be eaten too, in fact you're being eaten right this minute.

You know that you can buy iron supplements in pill form right?

But to answer your question on how to avoid beef. Why not just research the deplorable life beef cattle go through in order for the industry put cheap meat on your table. The guilt is a good way to get away from beef.

Beef its whats for dinner................

By cutting out red meat you are hardly cutting out iron . There are many veggie foods available that contain a much higher amount of iron. View this chart to give you an idea.

http://www.soystache.com/plant.htm...

3.5 ounces of soybean will give you 15.7 mg of iron
3.5 ounces of ground beef will give you 2.44 mg of iron

3.5 ounces of Beans, kidney, royal red, mature seeds, raw 8.7 mg of iron

Do look at this site it will give you many options and comparisons between plant based foods and meat.

Here is another site I found for you.

Black strap molasses (I put it on peanut butter on a rice cake)
Millet, quinoa, sea vegetables, beans. You can also buy vegetarian iron supplements. Take your iron rich foods when your aren't eating calcium rich foods. It inhibits absorption. Also, have vitamin C rich food with the iron, because it helps the absorption.
