sarmale is not a dessert! papanasi is a fried cheese fritter, very difficult to make properly in the usa, here is a rough translation:

Ingredients
500 gr fresh cottage cheese
100 gr sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
200 gr flour
sour cream
jam
Pieces: 10
Method
1. Mix the cottage cheese with the sugar and the baking powder. After that add the eggs and the vanilla extract and at the very end the flour. You can mix it with a mixer for better homogeneity.
*if the cottage cheese is moist, you might need 1 Tbspoon of flour to the composition; the dough has to be easy to handle, not too sticky.
2. In a deep pan heat some oil.
3. Make small balls of dough, a size that would fit in your hands. Make a whole through the center of it with your finger and take it through flour. Enlarge carefully the whole and flatten the ball of dough a little.
4. Fry them in hot oil on both sides until they get color. (aprox 5 minutes)
5. Serve with sour cream and jam on top.
Alternatives ingredients:
the zest of one lemon
vanilla
salt
powdered sugar

2. With your hands covered in flour take cheese out of the bowl and squeeze to make balls some 5 cm (1 ? in) in diameter. Place them on a dish.

3. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan, and add a pinch of salt. In a second pot or pan, heat the oil and pour the bread crumbs. Stir until bread crumbs turn light brown, then turn the heat off and add the sugar.

4. Add the sugar and mix well.

5. The papanasi in the other pot are finished boiling when they rise to the surface. Remove them with the slotted spoon and roll them in the bread crumbs and sugar mix.
