What to put in cole slaw?!

Question:

What to put in cole slaw?

I use celery seed, mustard, mayo, miracle whip and vinegar. Am I missing anything?

Answers:
You've got all the bases covered. One recipe I used for the dressing also used a bit of milk to make a thinner dressing, but I prefer the tang of cider vinegar to the smoothness of milk. You can also add some pepper (white or black - whatever you have) if that suits you. I have also added some sugar, but I find I don't prefer my cole slaw too sweet. Just keep tasting the dressing. When you say "YUM" you'll know you're there.

For the veggie part of the slaw, some people use just shredded or chopped cabbage, often with some purple (red) cabbage for color, and shredded carrot for color and flavor. Onion is an option, but changes the taste rather dramatically.

Remember that the dressing ingredients should be mixed together BEFORE adding to the cabbage mixture. Otherwise, the flavors don't blend, and you'll end up with a lumpy mess.

hi im a chef the main ingrediants for colslaw are; carot, oinion shredded lettice and mayo. that is for basic colslaw that you buy in shops

Ingredients:
2 onions
1 large head cabbage
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon mustard seed
3/4 cup salad oil
1 cup vinegar
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon celery seed
Chop cabbage and onion and toss together. Heat oil, vinegar, salt, sugar, seeds. Bring to boil. Pour over cabbage - onion mixture. Chill 24 hours. Stir and serve.

I have made some really good slaw using cabbage and onion and a finely chopped cucumber--add a dash of sugar, miracle whip and rice vinegar. Depends on your own tastes as to what you will like.

You are on the right track. I make it all the time but only use (light) Miracle Whip (instead of Mayonaise) and I add a bit of shredded carrots and red cabbage. To avoid it getting soggy or too tart, add just a bit of vinegar or substitute with rice vinegar (it's a bit sweeter).

I rarely make coleslaw. maybe I've made it once in 20 years of marriage. It is soooooo much easier to buy a bag of coleslaw from the salad department & a bottle of Kraft coleslaw dressing.

actually I was in a dutch restraunt and they added diced apples! It was great!
