So why wasn't I told about British food?!

Question:

So why wasn't I told about British food?

There is a British store in my city that sells all sorts of hard to find British food, tea, snacks, beautiques, etc. Why didn't anyone ever tell me that these products existed? Why aren't any of this stuff mainstream in the U.S. already? OMG, Star Bar candy bars are to die for. Marmalaide is delicious with toast. HP is an excellent sauce which goes on top of Shepherds pie which is to die for. And OMG have you tried these tarts by Holmfield Bakery? I can live off of those. Also for those who like Kit Kat, the British make a BIG KitKat bar where all you get is one giant bar. It's quite a tasty treat.

Why is it impossible to find this delicious stuff at American grocery stores? Why isn't this mainstream American already? I know it's expensive but that could be because it's made in England and labor is expensive over there plus it's like buying a specialty item.

Why wasn't I ever told about British food? I would have loved to have had British candy when I was younger.

I also wanted to mention that I had my first drink of Guinness Beer 3 months ago and now I'm hooked. I keep finding myself back at the Irish Pub in town.

I was living in England for a whole year before I've tried Mar mite...I cant live without it.
then followed pickle, brown sauce, sausages,gravy(OMG-essential now),bread&butter pudding, trife(!!!!!), marmalade.
It was just no one ever told me how tasty those things are.i think it is some kind of conspiracy, so OUTSIDERS(you know, what i mean)will not eat English national treasures ;)))))

You can find a fairly good selection at any "gourmet"-type grocery store and World Market (Cost Plus, as I hear it called sometimes). Even some international markets may carry a selection, but you have to investigate on an individual basis.

Trivia: Kit Kat was Princess Diana's favorite candy bar!

mmmm...maltesers and mars bars. i wish we could get kingsmill bread in the u.s.!!!

OMG there are some Happy people living in the USA

so glad you like some of our food, especially HP sauce

Make sure you get hold of a box of Yorkshire Tea bags to wash all that down. Tea and toast in the morning and tea and caburys chocolate in the evening is the best.

I couldnt live without tea. If you come over here make sure you eat a sunday roast beef dinner in a pub and get some fish and chips from a fish and chip shop. I would miss these living abroad

If you are so happy with those treats you should take a trip to Canada, we have all those things here and more.

I think you would enjoy Weetibix cereral, Jacobs Cream Crackers, we have big Kit Kats, a a Cadbury bar called "Flake", it is like eating a chocolate cloud.

I always buy PG Tips tea, it is sold in our regular supermarkets, and the Heinz beans here are as close the UK brand as possible.

I was a chef for many years here, I also have travelled to the UK, and to Scotland, we have almost everything the British stores sell, there are few exceptions, but I go to a shop in Toronto that sells English sweets, like Walnut Whip, Turkish Delight and Cadbury Buttons.

No one told you about British food because there is a lot of prejudice and jokes because it is not a complicated cuisine like Chinese or French. But, as you have discovered, it can be delicious.

Personally, I love french fries (chips) with gravy and a sprinkle of vinegar. Yummy.

Another favorite of mine is steak and kidney pie or pudding. The real thing is hard to find but just delicious. No veggies in it, btw.

By US standards, British food is naturally superior. For a true blue taste sensation, go for Aussie products - they RULE!

Vegemite is better than Marmite any day.

What is a beautique?
If you mean a small store as opposed to a hypermarket, then the word is boutique. This is French and normally used in English for a small over-priced store selling clothes and accessories. A small store selling foreign specialities is a delicatessen (not a deli). The word is German - Delikatessen - which means delicate eating. I think these foods might be available in the US. Try going to areas where there is a predominance of people with Scottish and/or Irish ancestry.

I guess we don't know how lucky we are! LOL

How sad!

It's because we're greedy and want it all for ourselves!LOL Glad you enjoy it though!
