they explode because soda has carbon in it (bubbles) and when u drop the mentos into it it makes bubbles and ontop of the mentos it has little holes the bubble get trapped in the holes and explode , i did this in a school expirement :)

I think it has something to do with the chemicals inside both of them.
its called nucluation, the mentos have very small divits in them that for air and yeah just watch mythbusters on tv they get all tech. and im just a dumby so ya there you go
