Answers:
STEAK WITH SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE

1 1/2 lbs. round steak or venison, 1/2 inch thick
1 tbsp. fat
1 envelope brown gravy mix
2 c. water
1 tbsp. instant minced onion
2 tbsp. white wine vinegar
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 bay leaf

Cut meat into 1 inch squares. In a large, skillet, brown meat on all sides in hot fat. Remove meat from skillet; add gravy mix and water. Bring to boiling, stirring constantly. Stir in remaining ingredients. Return meat to skillet; cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf. Serve over hot buttered noodles.

How about an American Style Barbecue? With a sweet and spicy sauce.

My advice is don't try to compete with him in his forte. Give him something totally different from what he may be expecting.

Enjoy the visit and the meal. Good luck!

sounds like sweet and sour pork made with oranges, pineapple and green peppers in the sauce. it is very hard to make and get right with the underlying sour taste after the sweet on top from the sauce; but is the most "worth the effort" dish in the world.

Make him a dish that you like. He should not judge you on your cooking but should be pleased that you did something special for him.

The best kind of cooking you can do for someone who is an expert is to keep it simple.
Why not grill up some steaks or chicken?
Veggie kabobs on the grill are easy and go well with grilled meats. Maybe throw in some pineapple on the kabob for variety.
And if you do that you can get mostly everything done ahead of time and you will have more time to visit.

Forget Europe--you won't match his abilities. Buy this: flank steak (3#, you'll make sandwiches next day), flour & corn tortillas (1 doz each), tomatoes, iceberg & romaine lettuce, + veggies to add to salad, sour cream, cilantro, small can hot sauce. Cut meat into portions, pan fry or better yet, grill. Buy some rice, refried beans & boiled beans at a Mexican restaurant. You're totally set. Might buy some Sangria.

Pay a visit to the butcher shop for ideas. See what looks good, ask for ideas. Don't feel like you have to cook dutch just for him, cook what you are good at, what you know. Better to be a success at something you know, than to experiment and flop. You might try a new recipe out on family or friends before you try it on him,Look at allrecipes.com, perhaps there is an orange sald or dessert that would fit the bill.
