Question:

Frosting a molded cake... need some tips!?

Hi! I am making a Super Mario cake for my husband for Fathers Day, and I was wondering what was the best way to frost this molded cake. I was thinking about doing one thin layer of white frosting and then decorating Mario's outfit with those tubes of colored decorating frosting over it... but as I am looking at the cake (it is cooling) - the features of the cake are somewhat delicate - should I just apply the colored frosting (you know, in the tubes) directly to the cake - or is that a bad idea? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks ahead of time!

Answers:
Apply a crumb coat first: spread a thin even layer of white frosting over the entire cake then refrigerate or freeze it until it is set, this makes it easier to apply the final decorations.

Cheffy is right, and you can refrigerate the cake before the crumb coat, and after the crumb coat, makes the frosting easier to spread. Make sure the crumb coat is not to thick, so it won't destroy the cake. Then get your tubes out and decorate!

As the crumb coat may distort the features or cover the design completely, I would just decorate with the tubes of frosting.
