Food chain?!

Question:

Food chain?

What is the lonest food chain in the world that doesn't contain humans or repition?

Answers:
Because of the nature of food chains, five links is about all you get. At the lowest level you have plants that convert sunlight and water into sugars and oxygen. Because of biologic inefficiencies in attaining and converting these nutrients, not to mention side trips that consume energy like sex and internet surfing, it takes 10 units of prey for each unit of predator. At the top of the chain, size limitations imposed by gravity or water pressure define an upper boundary in size. So in the end, five levels is about all you get.
The term food chain is kind of out-dated though since generally most animals are eating all sorts of living things from plants to animals with no sense of hierarchical boundary. Even apex predators like Ted Nugent will occasionally eat vegetable matter.
