Expired baby food?!

Question:

Expired baby food?

Two days ago I went grocery shopping at my local SweetBay supermarket. I bought a bunch of gerber baby organic sweet potatoes and came home. I opened one up and began feeding my daughter. In the back of my mind I noticed that the color and consistancy was a little different than it usually is, but i thought it was perhaps because of it being organic. My mother was there as I was finishing the feeding, and i told her about how these potatoes werent the same as the ones before. She asked me if i had looked at the expiration date and when i did i found that they were expired by MONTHS. I looked at the rest of the food and the expiration date wasn't until sometime in 2008. I'm of course going to bring back the expired product but is there anything i can expect the grocery store to do to compensate me? I'm incredibly angry that they could allow this to happen!!

Answers:
A similar situation has happened to me before. They should either replace your purchases or give you a refund. If they do none of the 2, I think you have a right to sue them. Most marketplaces do give refunds for expired food. Especially if it is expired by MONTHS! Hopefully I have been some help to you.

Show them the expiration date.

They better compensate you, by giving you a credit or exchange. They should have taken it off the shelf. . .how many others have experienced the same thing. It is a good thing you noticed.
Hope you get some reimbursement. You have every right to be angry. Ask to speak to the manager, remain calm, yelling won't help. You can get your point across just as well without having a screaming match. It is the employees fault for not checking and restocking the shelves.

No, they wont compensate you, just refund your money. You suffered no damages to be compensated for. Its a good idea to always check the exp date as you shop, because stores often overlook it. I once purchased something that had been expired over a year. Now, I check everything

They only have to compensate you for the price you paid for the expired food, your child hasn't suffered any permanent damage nor is she likely too. These things happen sometimes, you'll just have to be a more diligent customer by checking for the dates before you purchase them and especially before feeding them to your baby. I check for expiration dates all the time now because I have purchased expired products in the past and I bring it to the store employee's attention when I find it's passed it's date.
