Why should you not re-freeze foods once defrosted?!

Question:

Why should you not re-freeze foods once defrosted?

...surely re-freeezing will serve only to preserve your product but halting the growth of bacteria...

Answers:
It depends on how you thaw the product. If you thaw in the refrigerator where the temperature is cold (approx. 40 degrees), then you can refreeze safely. However, items that are thawed at room temperature and allowed to get to room temperature are a breeding ground for bacteria. If you thaw it again and don't get the temperature to the recommended temperature some bacteria can survive and you will make yourself and possibly others very sick, expecially the elderly and small children.

Freezing will prevent bacteria from multiplying but it does not destroy them. Once frozen food has been thawed, the bacteria may multiply with renewed energy. If food is frozen and thawed repeatedly, bacteria could reach dangerous levels.

You can refreeze food safely if it has been cooked after thawing. However, freezing also results in some loss of moisture and if food is repeatedly frozen and thawed, it will become unpleasantly dry. Fibrous food like meat also loses its texture as it thaws, and will become flabby if it is refrozen and thawed again, say in a casserole.

i think it has something to do with bacteria...once something has defrosted and you refreeze it arent u preserving the bacteria?......lol i have no clue!

One would think so, but once it has been on the shelf so to speak in the grocery store made it home to your place, and then was frozen and defrosted it has been in the danger zone for to long (if defrosted using the counter or under running water). Otherwise, the freezing and defrosting, and then refreezing etc...would break down the cells of the product, leaving it an ooey gooey mess.

Once you have cooked the item it is ok to refreeze, but never re-freeze a previously frozen raw product.

you will get salmonella poisoning if you eat the food after you re-freeze it.

Ya you re-freeze you will loss. The bacteria only goes dormant Ya , You will get food poisoning .. Don't do you.

You CAN refreeze food if it,s been cooked.
