Is there a sure fire way to pick a good watermelon?!

Question:

Is there a sure fire way to pick a good watermelon?

My family loves watermelon. Unfortunately, choosing a good one seems to be a craps shoot. How can I improve my chances of a tasty, non-mushy treat the next time I buy produce?

Answers:
Thump it with your fist. You want a hollow sound. The more bee stings the rind has, the sweeter the melon. I've had some people tell me to smell it, but I don't know what to smell for.

May not be sure fire. But I always thump the watermelon. If it sounds very hallow they are usually the best, juicy and sweet and not soggy.

Got this from my Grandma. She use to pick watermelons in the south when she was young.

My daughter just started working in the produce section of a large market and she was told that the more creamy white color is on the outside, the better the melon is.

I've tried thumping the melons, too, but I seem to be kind of tone-deaf where they are concerned.

Another idea for you is to ask the produce person to pick the melon for you. I've done that and had some really good ones picked out for me--and one not-so-good one, too. That's better than I'd do on my own, though.

i was taught that if you hold the melon close to your ear, and "flick" it with your finger or fist if its a big one, it should sound hollow, a good melon sounds hollow
