As a proud New Yorker an purveyor of many a bagel shop in this great city I can tell you unequivocally that a bagel should be SOFT an not hard, provided it is fresh. Served with cream cheese or lox (or both) a bagel "hits the spot!" and is the perfect meal for any time. Try a bagel with tuna! A pizza bagel (or a dozen!).
The only bagels sold outside of New York that bare any resemblance to actual New York bagels are Thomas's Bagels (you know the people who make the English Muffin?) Their EVERYTHING bagel is the absolute best. I hope you find success in your quest for the perfect bagel. If not, send me a message (just click on my picture to get to my profile then click on send message) and maybe we can work something out!
Good Luck

I'm a guy who likes to eat!
A fresh bagel is soft and warm.
Day old bagel is cold and chewy.
Two day old bagel is a dog toy.
Three day old bagel is a hockey puck.
Get 'em new, and if you have to keep them, toast them up and give them a schmear.
there not soft but there not hard they are chewy i'd say
they are nice toasted with ham and cheese and a nice cup of coffee or hot chocolate
fresh bagel is always soft please
I eat egg bagels from L.A. They are soft.
They should be medium-soft and chewy. And I like mine toasted with cream cheese.
