Are eggs with two yolks safe to eat?!

Question:

Are eggs with two yolks safe to eat?

I had a carton of eggs where the majority of them had two yolks. What is the cause (hormones?) and are they safe to eat?

Answers:
Some hens will lay double-yolked eggs as the result of unsynchronized production cycles. Although heredity causes some hens to have a higher propensity to lay double-yolked eggs, these occur more frequently as occasional abnormalities in young hens beginning to lay. Usually a double-yolked egg will be longer and thinner than an ordinary single-yolk egg. Double-yolked eggs occur rarely, and will only lead to the successful development of two embryos with human intervention

It is also possible for a young hen to produce an egg with no yolk at all. Yolkless eggs are usually formed about a bit of tissue that is sloughed off the ovary or oviduct. This tissue stimulates the secreting glands of the oviduct and a yolkless egg results.

Yes they are safe to eat. Ive come across many in my life time the kids get a kick out of it. I got that information from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/egg_(food)...

They're perfectly safe, some hens are just good at making double yolkers. I have a hen who lays them just about every time. You can usually tell by the shape of the egg, it tends to be a little more elongated than the regular single yolk ones.

It's caused by unsynchronized production cycles, usually in first year hens. Double yolk eggs won't hatch... actually I've heard of it happening but never anything confirmed.

yes, ok to eat

Sure. Twins.

Hey you hit the jackpot, yes they are safe to eat .

Lovely a double yolker, yes they are safe to eat

yap, but it never happens to me and i want to see eggs with two yolks

yes

i think it's pretty normal because we get those a lot and its safe to eat. it tastes the same and its pretty much two eggs in one?

Yes that always happens with the jumbo size. Makes it difficult when you're trying to separate yolks from whites for a cake. I was raised on them, and I'm still here.

They're just twins. Perfectly safe to eat.

BONUS!!!
when i crack an egg, i only wish it had 2 yolks!

Double-yolkers occur when ovulation happens too rapidly, or when a yolk gets lost and is joined by the next one in line. They’re most often laid by pullets just beginning to synchronize their laying pattern, and some heavy-breed hens carry this tendency as an inherited trait. Rarely, an egg contains more than two yolks - the world record is nine yolks in one egg. You can eat it in other words.

Yes, double yolks are safe to eat. If left to hatch, there would be twin chicks - hence the 2 yolks. Certain hens, just like humans, have it in their genes to be more likely to produce twins than the rest of the population. The "twin eggs" are just as safe to eat as eggs with the single yolks.

eggs are not good for health

Yeah, totally safe. It just means that the chicken was going to have twins. It's the same concept as in humans. However, if it begins to happen too too frequently, it might be a sign of something that's not right.

(But then again, what is right about today's factory farming pactices???)

Omelet me see. Yes. Yes.

yes i have had loads thru out my life,i am still here...

enjoy
