I would highly recommend you stock up on vegetarian options. Boca, morningstar farms, and garden burger make some great alternaive foods such as vegetarian sausage, bacon, eggs, burgers (assorted kinds), chicken patties, chicken nuggets, BBQ ribs, ground beef, corndogs and hotdogs, breakfast burritos, and breakfast scramblers. Plus, they have vegetarian style lunch meats and vegan cheeses in the produce section of most grocery stores. These will help you get on the right path until you learn how to make your own vegetarian meals. Make sure you eat plenty of russett or yukon potatos as they have high amounts of vitamin B12. Many other vegtables have vitamin B12 but not in as high of quantitiy at these potatos. As far as protien you can eat plenty of beans, legumes, and nuts. They make plenty of soy options out there and soy is packed with protien. Just make sure you get it from different sources. Good luck.

Its hard to become a vegan because its unnatural,no matter what any"expert" tells you here it is impossible to maintain a healthy body using a strict vegan diet, dont deny evolution,a healthy person uses all food groups

try to casually lower your amount of meat intakeb until its completely gone, and set consequences for yourself for if you eat meat.

If your wanting to become vegetarian is for the right reasons, you should have absolutely no problem doing it.

But if you are truly having problems, take things slowly. Start by cutting out one type of meat first. (preferably chicken or pork) and then when you are ok with that, cut out another kind. Look for vegetarian cookbooks and meat replacements that make cooking vegetarian easier. Hope this helped.

GO to Peta.com and you can order a free vegetarian starter kit. Also a good place to start is to get a book. The idiots guide to being a veg. Is good. It will tell you what you can eat and what you can't. Also there are alot of useful websites.
Also remeber that you have been a non vegetarian all your life you may not be able to make the transtion overnight. Learn from it and move on.
Good luck.

One thing you need to have if you really want to be vegetarian is variety to your diet.

Try different veggies, learn to prepare them in different ways, and don't just stick to tofu stir-fries. They get old fast.

If you really want to, I can compile a list fo some of my favorite recipies, but I don't have that kind of time until Thursday.

Also, any of the Moosewood cookbooks are great places to start. The meals within are creative, delectable, and open to modification. Not to mention, awesome.

Now my only trouble is stopping myself from going back to those darn roast-beef sandwhiches.

Its simple and easy when you really put your mind to it. First off, i found meat extremely hard to give up, i mean it really tastes good doesnt it? The most effective thing to do would be to wean yourself off gradually, subsituting imitiation meats instead. Moringstar farm Grillers are the closest ive ever tatsed to real meat in my life. The Bk veggie burgers from Burger King arent exactly a good replica but they do tatse really really good. Just about any restuarant you go to has some form of vegetarian meal, stated or not. In fact, my favuoirte places to go are often steakhouses, just because they have such a wide variety of non-meat foods. The most important thing to do, though, is to focus on the torture of innocent animals that happens simply because you eat meat. That for me was the most effective, but you might have a different reason to quit eating meat, such as health or the like. Either way, the benefits of vegetarianism are what you really should be focusing on.

Oh and dont listen to that first answerer, even though it might not have been natural when humans were wandering nomads on the frozen tundra, in this day and age it is one of the best things you can do for your body. Over eating of meat, in the portions Americans do, has been linked to different cancers, high blood pressure, you name it. And getting 'Complete Proteins' is easy, you just dont eat the EXACT same thing for the rest of your life and you will be fine. Maybe hes right though, i mean why stop there? lets just do away with antibiotics and vaccines, those arent natural either! that way evolution will really kick in!

My feeling is that the two most important things are knowing the nutrition facts, and finding vegetarian dishes with texture.
Many people in our society have become used to a diet where the main course, meat, is chewy... something you can sink your teeth into. While vegetable dishes are thought of as being "on the side", and are often soft. If you make the transition to a vegetarian diet, and everything you eat is soft, then you may feel as if you haven't "really" eaten. Even if you are satisfying your nutritional requirements, there may be a missing psychological need to bite into something that seems substantial.
So I think it's real important to find dishes that have chewiness to them. Pizza is a great example. We can eat that as a main course and not feel as if we had only eaten a side dish. But pizza isn't the only chewy bread product. Italian and French bread have texture. Supermarkets are starting to carry an assortment of old-world-style, artisan breads of many varieties, which have a lot of substance. Flat breads are another possibility. I would highly recommend the cookbook "Flatbreads and Flavors". It's one of my favorite cookbooks, and has wonderful flatbread recipes from around the world, as well as recipes for accompaniments. Pasta cooked al dente also has a soul-satisfying firmness to the tooth. If you like to cook, try making homemade ravioli. (It helps if you own an Atlas pasta machine, but you can also roll out ravioli dough by hand with a rolling pin.) You can fill the ravioli with re-fried beans, or ricotta and wilted spinach, or devise other fillings. The firm al dente pasta wrapper complements the soft filling nicely, and is soul satisfying. The whole area of wrapped food is worth exploring. Cultures all over the world wrap soft filling ingredients inside chewy or crunchy wrapping layer. Everything from empanadas, to egg rolls to flat-bread rollups. The cookbook "Cooking Under Wraps" explores this theme in depth. Another thing to explore is fried tofu in chinese dishes. Use the firmest grade of tofu that is available where you shop. You might also explore dried tofu, which is re-hydrated by soaking, and can then be fried.
On the nutrition side, you need to make sure that you are eating complete proteins. Otherwise your health can suffer. If you eat some animal products, such as milk, cheese, eggs, fish, then getting complete proteins isn't a big issue. But if you avoid animal products altogether, then you need to make an effort to get complementary foods in your diet. The basic rule of thumb is to eat both grains (rice, pasta, bread, cereals, etc) and legumes or bean family foods (peas, beans, tofu, peanuts, garbanzo beans or chick peas, lentils, etc.). The combination of these two food groups gives you a complete protein.

Get a book. Try this one:
Becoming Vegetarian
You can get it at Amazon.Com.
Watch the movie EARTHLINGS.
You can find it in three parts on YouTube.Com.
Watch the MEET YOUR MEAT videos at this site (use the nav bar on the left to choose animal videos to watch):
http://www.goveg.com/factoryfarming.asp...
Read books like THE CHINA STUDY and THE VEGAN DIET AS CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION to learn more about why eating meat and animal products are BAD for you.
If you do each and every one of the things I've just mentioned I seriously doubt you will be able to go back to eating animals products. That guy above me had really good advice about the foods to choose, too! It's worth the effort to make the change. It may be the single best thing you ever do for you body and you will really appreciate that as you get older! Good luck!

There are so many choices that can help you. Since it's hard for you to stick with it and want to go back to meat. Try Boca Burgers. They are made of soy and come in a variety of choices. Theirs also Morning Star that has great imitation chicken. These are great choices instead of meat and are still packed with protein.

slow cut down the amount of meat you eat, its a lot simpiler, but im wondering it really shouldnt be that hard if you really love animals. When i wanted my friends to become veggie(i only got one to though) i just told them to think of the RAW form of the meat and they kinda just didnt eat it.

it would be hard to top some of the great answers already posted, especially the one by raymond. but i would like to add that it is important for you to know from your own research about the protein myth- just so you are never worried about it in the back of your mind. the best detailed explanation of this i have found is in a book called 'diet for a new america' by john robbins.
i know i used to love all kinds of meat, and ate plenty of it daily. then i got a random mailing from peta and learned about the cruelty involved. so i stopped eating it and found a lot of surpising things happened. i lost weight. i had more wind and energy. i also stopped getting sick-have not had even a cold since and its been 12 years now.
there are lots of books and sites on this, and i hope you look into it for your own health, the animals sake, and the environment.

First of all, there's poop in meat.

Secondly, watch the documentary by Jaqiun Pheonix called Earthlings.

i was able to stop eating meat cold turkey 6 months later im still vegetarian wen i want meat i think of eating my dogs and it goes away immediately since my dogs r cute n loving(well most of them anyway lol)

It's hard to break habits, no matter what they are. When you take something away from yourself, like meat, you have to replace it with something. Like a reward. Say for every week that you go without eating a certain food item, like meat, milk, or eggs, you reward yourelf with something that you like. It doesn't have to be huge or expensive, just enjoyable.
You also don't have to sacrifice taste or enjoyment when you get rid of meat. Look up different vegetarian dishes, different ethnic recipes and try them out. Experiment with seasonings, stuff like that. And don't force yourself to eat things you hate just because you think youre supposed to. I for one will not eat lentils. I hate them. If that makes me a bad vegetarian, at least I am a happy one. While you should eat for health, you should also eat for enjoyment. If you're enjoying what you're eating, it won't be hard to stick with it. Good luck!

you just have to do it all at once. if you don't, you'll probably fail because you'll realize that you still like meat. food-wise, boca burgers are the best. If you fail the way I suggested, and you'd rather do it a little at a time, just eat meatless food more often and meat less often. You probably shouldn't do one meat at a time (beef, then pork, then chicken then fish etc) because it will be harder...but if you want to try that, go ahead. here's a site that has lots of information and a video that might help a little: http://www.meat.org/ Good luck to you and e-mail or IM me if you have any questions.

its so simple make your mind that you want eat non -veg in your entire life at any coast that's the main thing and here is the list of protein which can help you to maintain your diet :-
Proteins: Body's protein needs can be provided by either animal or plant sources. Mixed protein diet obtained from various plant sources is better than animal protein and is recommended in diabetes, renal diseases and liver diseases. Mixed protein diet from different plant sources has been the pattern of diet in India for all vegetarians.

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are mainly found in plant foods; like cereals, grains, fresh and dry fruits, legumes, vegetable, greens, nuts etc. plant carbohydrates include' large amounts of starches, sugar and fibers which are important for gut functions. The body is better suited to a high carbohydrate diet than a low carbohydrate diet. In fact 55% of the food intake should be carbohydrate. All animal products do not contain carbohydrate which is essential for body.

Fat: Plant fats differ from animal fats in two different ways 1) they are cholesterol free 2) they generally contain more polyunsaturated fat and less saturated fats. Plant fats usually have higher polyunsaturated fat value than animal fats.

A diet which is low in cholesterol and which contains fat of a high PIS value is associated with a lower incident of coronary health disease.

Vitamins and Minerals: plant foods are rich in many vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is obtained by exposure of skin to sun light and this is not a problem in India.

Calcium: The vegetarians can meet their needs for calcium from dairy products. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Dark green vegetables are good sources of Riboflavin as are legumes and whole grain cereal.

Iron: The problem of iron deficiency is relatively common but vitamin C significantly enhances absorption of iron hence it is advisable for vegetarians to include with each meal a food high in vitamin C which as lime, citrus fruits or juices.

Zinc: Zinc is found in large number of plant foods.

Fiber: Fiber is found only in vegetarian food like whole grain cereals, legumes, greens, fruits, vegetable etc.

Thus in vegetarian foods all requirement of nutrition for body growth and maintenance is fulfilled. One can have a complete and balanced diet provided we take enough food which is as close to nature as possible in maintaining sturdy and disease free body. It is equally helpful in curing many diseases.

ADVANTAGES OF VEGETARIAN DIET:
More & more evidence is surfacing that directly links a prolonged non- vegetarian diet to diseases as cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, asthma just to name a few.

1. LOGEVITY: Vegetarian can expect to live 4-10 years longer then the non-vegetarians.

" Source: Seventh day Adventists study

2. LESS HEART DISEASE: Because of low fat, saturated fat and cholesterol content of the vegetarian diet the risk of heart disease is lowered. High blood cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of heart disease.

3. LESS CANCER: Up to 40% of all cancers are diet related. Cancer death rates have been associated with obesity and high fat / low fiber diet. Vitamin A & C are thought to be protective against colon cancer. Low fat diets protect against prostrate and breast cancer. Indoles, lignans, isoflavones, protease inhibitors which are present in plant foods and shown to be potent anti carcinogens.

4. LESS BOWEL DISEASE: Diverticular disease and appendicitis occur more frequently with low fiber intake as in meat diet.

5. LEES OBESITY & LESS INCIDENCE OF DIABETES: It is easier to plan a low fat diet for a vegetarian then for a meat eater. The fiber in plant food dilutes the energy & provides a satisfying meal without all the calories. Diabetes over the age of 40 seems to be related to obesity.

CONLUSION:
When activists like M.K. Gandhi, sports personalities like Martina Novratilova & Carl Lewis, beauties like Brooke Shields & Kate Winslet, physists like Edison, Albert Einstein & A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, religious leaders & mystics like Jesus & Osho can be legendaries in there respective fields taking the advantage of being vegetarian, Is'nt it more prudent on our part to switch over to vegetarianism & enjoy better quality & longevity of life.

It is mind over body, don't think of it just eat the vegetables.
