How are pickle jars sealed?!

Question:

How are pickle jars sealed?

no, seriously, do they just turn the lid on reeeeeally tight? is it somehow glued so that you can open it if you apply enough force? is all the air sucked out of it, thus holding the lid on? this is sort of a random question, i suppose...but i'm eating pickles...or at least the person next to me is. so, anyhow, does anyone know the answer to this unfathomable question?

Answers:
Actually, both answers can be correct. When I can pickles at home, you put the raw pickles, garlic and a head of dill in the jar. You bring the solution to a rolling boil, pour it over the pickles put on the lid and they will seal themselves. It's heat that expands and the cooling that contracts, sort of like a vacuum.

they are heated and this causes a vacuum when the jar cools.
It's a vacuum that seals the jar

it's like a canning jar, the liquid is hot when it is sealed, then as it cools, it contracts and creates a vaccuum, and sucks the lid down. Thats why you should look at the little button on the lid when you buy them, if it isnt still down, get a different jar.

heat... the first guy was right...

EEEEEEE.. DRIA IS EATING PICKLES???? LOL! HEHEHEHE! HAHAHAH!! OK IM GONNA STOP WITH THE CAPS LOCK! lol, srry i have this thing with picles. oh and i have no idea, but that is a super question.

What everyone left out is that there is a sealing material, kinda plasticy, on the lid where it touches the glass of the jar. When the heat forces out the air and the cooling sucks down the lid, the sealing material glues the lid down by forming a "seal" that does not allow air to pass through it.
