Why do vegetarians quote how long they have been veggie?!

Question:

Why do vegetarians quote how long they have been veggie?

Just curious, when many people sign off thier answers they put things like "veggie for xx years" etc.

i do it sometimes, and think i do it when people need evidence that one has some expereince and is able to answer with some credibility.

But you don't see it in other sections, people don't sign off "been painting walls for 20 years" in the DIY section, nor do they say "been a christian for 14 years " in the religous section

If you are veggie, why do you sign off with your veggie years ?

Is it because it was such a fundamental change for you, maybe ?

Funny really, sometimes reads a bit like "I've been off the drink for 20 years"

me, veggie for 27 years - bugger, done it again ;-)

Answers:
LOL< thats funny! I, too, sometimes do it just to show that I didnt become a vegetarian this morning-gives a little credibility for experience in the field. Thanks for the laugh

Been a veggie for years. Been paying bills for years. Been a woman most of my life. Been beffuddled even longer

I think you've answered your own question there...
People are always looking for recognition of achievements they have done and they see vegetarianism as an achievement.

Matt
Vegetarian for 15 hours 12 minutes 32 seconds

coz they think they are special coz they dont eat meat. i dont like veggies anyway, nuffin can beat a bacon sarny on a sunday morning!

annoyin for 14 years!

Why do they need to tell folk what they eat. Why don't they talk about what comes out the other end instead ? Would be a bit less pretentious if they did.

Perhaps it's so other people don't think they have 'jumped on the bandwagon' and are trying to be trendy. Also, it might prove that a veggie can live for a long time without eating meat!

Veggie for 20 odd years!

I'm in my 50s and I made my mothers life hell as a child , I would eat every thing on my plate but not my meat , I dont know at what age I became a "Veggie" and I think this is the first time I have ever mentioned it , I have never signed off as being a "Veggie" , maybe its so natural to me that I dont think of other people as not being "Veggies" too

If I stopped eating meat and dairy, I reckon I'd be able to tell you how many MINUTES it had been since I last ate meat!

lol

The same as an ex smoker

good point my love veggie for 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's an accomplishment. It shows how dedicated you are to your vegetarianism.

I know for me once I become a vegetarian, friends, family, and even strangers seem to worried that it isn't a healthy. They seem to think if you don't eat meat you are missing out important nurtients. So when someone says, "I've been a veggie for 5, 10, 15, 20, years" and they are still alive and well it's just proof that it possible to live without meat.

Being a vegetarian should also mean that you pay more attention to what you are putting in your body, and there is a learning curve. The longer you've been a vegetarian, the more you should know about it. I know that isn't always the truth, but hopefully it's true more often than not.

It also seems to be a question that is often asked. I know I get it alot when people find out I'm a vegetarian usually the 1st or 2nd question is how long have you been eating that way.

I'm sure everyone has their own reason for stating how long they've been a veggie, but I think these are common reasons.

There's a episode of South Park where everyone who buys a hybrid loves the smell of their own farts.

Some vegetarian also act in the same self-righteous manner.

Arrogance is found under every rock.

Enjoy your choices and BE happy with them.

Hmm, I don't know. I don't do it that often. When I do tell people how long, it's usually because they ask. For me, veganism is more of a given, it's not that much of an accomplishment. I'm more focused on doing my part to liberate animals and help others become veggie. The title is kind of superficial. It's the pragmatic attempts to restore the dignities to animals that have been stripped that are of real value to me. I look up to people who actually rescue animals and such. Being a vegan seems just too easy at times.

I think you hit it with the fundamental change angle, out of interest though i do sign of in the diy section with painting for18 years to prove my experience.
I think being vegetarian is so important to us that we feel the need to share the info.

Veggie for17 years with no looking back

Because people who became veggie recently will be regarded as doing it for *fashion* and those of us who have been veggie for a long time want people to know we aren't fashion victims!. I've been one for 15 years and did it for animal welfare reasons.

Well, when giving advice about vegetarianism, a person might say how long they've been veggie, so the other people know they are a REAL veggie, they've been at it X number of years without "going back," and it's not likely they WILL go back. When someone tells me they've been a vegetarian for 2 months or a few weeks, I always wonder if they're gonna stay veggie, of if this is just a passing phase for them.

Hope that answers your question

Vegetarian for 17 years (since I was 10) :P
