Answers:
The correct spelling is "puttanesca", and "puttana" means "whore" in Italian ("puta" is Spanish), but the origin of the name (of the recipe :) is not really clear; it *may* be related to second more ancient job in the world: a brothel-keeper in Naples was used to serve this dish to the "guests"; or the color of the women working in brothels, multicolored in order to attract people, was the inspiration for the ingredients for that... dressing; or was created by Yvette la Francese (Yvette the French), still, a prostitute, in order to celebrate in a funny way her French (Provence) origin.
According to Jeanne Carola Francesconi, a dish called "spaghetti alla marinara" was renamed "alla puttanesca" by painter Eduardo Colucci after WWII.

Those are the most popular speculation about the origin of the name of that sauce.

I live in Italy

Puttanesca, loosely translated, means prostitute. The pros would cook up dishes of this and the smell wafting out of their place of business would entice customers who would come in, have the pasta and then um, have sex. It's kind of interesting.

yes it is of Latin origin...the word pita mean 'whore/prostitute' and so the dish penne putanesca..is a dish that they could readily have in there rooms to eat with out having to be refrigerated....in between clients/suiters....now it is made to have on hand and there are lots of variations to the dish

puta means whore in italian. the ladies of the night used to cook it then put the pots near the windows to lure in the fishermen they'd do the deed then eat the pasta. rachael ray has a cool take on pasta puttanesca - it's fast, easy, and it can be spicy if you want it to be!
