Is this a real dish?!

Question:

Is this a real dish?

When I was little my mom used to serve me a fried egg on top of mashed potatoes for breakfast. I am not sure if this was just because we did not have bread or if this is an actual dish!
Anyone ever had this? Does it have a name?

Thanks!

Answers:
It's actually a pretty common dish in some areas, so to answer your first question... yes it's a real dish. Also, I will answer yes to your second question as I have had it served to me several times, but when I cook I prefer the potato pancake version, but it takes longer to make (maybe this is why your mom did the mashed version). As for your final question, I've never heard it given a special name like "spud a la egg" or "egg mountain" or "egg volcano" (egg volcano requires the egg to be poached with a runny yolk for the lava). I'm just making those names up as I go. In fact, I've never seen anyone call it anything other than "egg on mashed potatoes" or similarly accurate if not interesting name. I did search around a bit and found a bunch of recipe sites that had it, but they all used the boring name.

I never heard of it, but then again we are more of a cereal family.

Used to have it for breakfast myself many years ago. was even better with a bit of grated cheddar and pepper. Was bread as well

If you ate it, it was a real dish. Who knows how all those crazy things get thought up...but after reading that, I'm hungry.

Sounds like your mom invented something new. Was it good? It sounds - well - yucky.

did you know they have a place in california that serves a hamburger with a fried egg on top I never heard of this before but my daughter in law had it and said it was wonderful

I have had mashed potatoes for breakfast they were made into a patty and fried then the eggs were on the same plate but not on top. name I don't know we just called it breakfast

I think your mom was a GENIUS! How wonderful to serve your child protein AND starch before school! This is not only a real dish, but it's a real smart dish that should be called Brain Food. The only thing I would change is that I would put the egg on top of cheese grits! Yummaaayyyyy!

I don't know if it s got a name, but who cares? That sounds awesome I have to try it kudos to your mom

It actually sounds good. My mom used to use leftover mashed potatoes for potato patties and put the egg on top. We just called it good and usually cleaned our plates.

My mom used to fix a fried egg, serve in the middle of mashed potatoes & spread fried sausage ( browned just like hamburger meat, not in patties) around the edges & drizzle the whole plate with pancake syrup.......Yummy!!

its doent have a name but yes i did have it before its so good

apparently it was a dish at your house.... I had a similar dish served at mine only the eggs were scrambled with fried potatoes and onions. now a days I have to watch my carbs so I eat very few potatoes.
