Why are vegetable and Fruits so Expensive in the UK?!

Question:

Why are vegetable and Fruits so Expensive in the UK?

Are there cheaper places I can buy Fruits and Veg? I tried our local fruit market but noticed the produce has a very short shelf life. Would this be my only alternative?

Answers:
The reason they don't have a very long shelf life is because they are so much fresher and better for you than the fruit and veg in the supermarket.
I watched a TV programme about where are food comes from the fruit and veg in the supermarket can be frozen when it arrives there and may have been frozen for more than 12 months. The reason why its do expensive to buy from supermarkets is because your paying for the travel costs some may have been imported from Spain, Egypt and all over the world so your paying for that.
I think your best option is to buy it from the fruit and veg shop you know it hasn't come to far from where you live and its also fresher.

Maybe F&V is expensive in the UK because they have to import most of it.

Your best option is to grow your own.

Expensive?..Not com paired to alcohol or tobacco or eating out.The old saying is true."You pay the money and take your choice."

I'm vegetarian so eat heaps of veg - so I know how expensive it is and the stuff I buy from Tesco's it doesn't have a great shelf life. I have heard that Lidle (not sure if correct spelling) its a German supermarket - has fantastic fruit & is really cheap, im just too conserned about my street cred to shop there!!!

Compared to where?A lot ,if not most fruit is imported. If you stick to English fruit in season it won't be all that expensive.Home grown vegetables are also not too expensive. The more exotic ones are.Farm shops are good places to buy fresh veg and fruit. The longer life of some supermarket items is because they have been treated in some way and might not be as fresh and wholesome as you would think.Basic English veg like potatoes, carrots ,onions and cabbage are all quite cheap.Buy things like apples and plums in season and avoid expensive foreign produce.

I'm in Sweden, and I'm surprised how expensive all the fruit and veges are compared to NZ and the quality!!
The quality is awful and the selection is awful.

Quite frankly, I think it's all down to the EU and the stupid tarriffs and the stupid trade agreements.

Because whatever is actually good for us supermarkets decide to charge us double the price! It's all a money making scheme.

umm...in london its very ethnical and there is an asian part in redbridge (borough) near ilford and there is an asian shop there called quality foods and its really good-you can buy 4 cucumbers for a pound (good ones) while tescos sell them for 80 p each! and 5 lemons for a pound...its a really good shop i go there all the time. its on ilford lane but you cant go there you can (this is not a racist remark-im part asian myself) in a lot of asian areas there are a lot of shops which sell fruits and veg REALLY cheap and they really are good quality.

i think that supermarkets are so expensive because now people want to eat "healthily" so they charge more for the healthier food.
