Different sushi?!

Question:

Different sushi?

I've had sushi one time from a convienience store in New York City and found it completley disgusting. I think it was tuna, with some sort of little green globule and rice in it. My dad said there is way better Sushi, so I'd like other people's opinions. Do you like Sushi? Did I probably just get some nasty stuff? I want to go to Japan sometime and want to eat sushi there. Whats the best kind to get?

Answers:
ahh, dont let that experience scare you away ! The green thing was Wasabi.
Try going to an authentic sushi place..what you have was definitely not fresh..stay away from grocery stores too. Try salmon and tuna..yet to start out you could get a California roll with veggies in it and various seafood or other ingredients..then you can look at the menu ( most good restaurants offer a picture card so there will be no surprises )
good luck and try the miso soup ! I love sushi and hope you have a better experience next time, Bon Appetit !

ya i like sushi, and yes its WAY better at a resturant, not a convience store. there really is no best kind to get, its whatever you like. example, tuna, crab, shrimp, wasabi, veg. theres lots to choose from

hi there! In Japan the sushi is very plain. Its usually a piece of plain fish and that's it. If you go to a sushi rest. they have so many choices for amazing different rolls. One of my favorites is the American Dream roll. It is Shrimp tempura, cream cheese, crab, etc. Other really Good rolls to try are the Sapporo roll, Mexican Roll. Also if you are new to sushi, Stick to the cooked ones. You will LOVE them. Sushi is def my fave food. Have fun with it . :)

The key to good sushi is the use of fresh fish. I can't imagine that the sushi you had from a convenience store in NYC could be even remotely fresh. I personally wouldn't eat raw fish from a convenience store if they were paying me to take it. If you are interested in trying again, I would suggest that you go to a real Japanese restaurant and try sushi there. Not only with the fish be fresh, but you can enlist the waiter in helping you pick one you would like, since there are all different kinds of sushi.

I LOVE sushi. But the first time I ever had it, I didn't like it. I believe that it is an aquired taste. Grocery store sushi isn't the best type to get.

For a first timer, try a california roll from a nice restaurant. A philidelphia roll also is also great. And even though this sounds disgusting, try eel and avacado... it's really good too.

New York has some of the best sushi in America. Go to a nice restaurant when you get the chance, don't do grocery store sushi. The more often you have it, the better it gets and the more you will want it. It's addictive :)

Tough call. Some people just don't like sushi. You may be one of those people. In your case, however, I think your first experience wasn't a good one. It's not a good idea to get sushi from a convenience store -- you're really better off going to a sushi bar even though it's more expensive. The pre-packaged stuff is nowhere near as tasty as the sushi you get at a sushi bar.

I'd encourage you to try tuna at a sushi bar, even though you didn't like the stuff you had. Tuna is very mild-tasting and really tastes great when it's fresh. If you like milder fish, I'd also recommend salmon, yellowtail, snapper, or any other type of whitefish. Mackerel is VERY fishy tasting, and the more exotic stuff like eel and sea urchin should not be on your plate the first time you try sushi at a bar.

P.S.: The green globule is Wasabi, which is Japanese horseradish. You don't have to use it -- most people take a little bit of that Wasabi and put it in a small dish with soy sauce, and that's what they dip their sushi in.

The green stuff is wasabi,Its like a horse radish.I like mines hot.You should try a mix of sushi and decide which is best for you.And plz never eat sushi out of a store go to a nice restaurant. The sushi in the states taste the same as in japan if you go to the right resto.Enjoy!

i personally like sushi, but my mother is japanesse, so I'm a little bias. Whether you got bad sushi or not is hard to tell, you may have gotten something you just don't like. There are so many different kinds you should try several before making up your mind.

Remember sushi is not raw fish, it's vinager rice, sashimi is raw fish. So you might not like the raw fish sushi's but you may like the others.

Funny thing about sushi, back in the 80's, I was always with people that ate sushi, they were around me, cause I ate sushi. It was like the blind leading the blind, none of us liked sushi. There is nothing wrong with sushi if you like it, but I perfer a pizza.

Definately wait until you've tried sushi from a good sushi restaurant before you decide its no good. I have always loved sushi. Make sure you're getting it fresh from people who know what they're doing and handling their fish safely. I think my favorite sushi roll of all time is a spicy scallop volcano roll. Anything made from fresh or smoked salmon is wonderful too.
