How do you cook a jacket potato properly/professionally?!

Question:

How do you cook a jacket potato properly/professionally?

Answers:
No, no, no. Foil steams the potato and makes the skin slick and the inside wet and mushy.

Stick the potato skin a few times to allow steam to exit. Rub the skin with a little oil. I prefer olive oil. If you like rub, roll it in a little kosher salt.

Bake at 400 for up to an hour depending on the size of the potato until the potato gives when you squeeze it.

This method makes the skin (jacket) delicious and leaves the inside light and fluffy,

wrap in silver foil and pop in the oven

wrap it in aluminium foil and stick it in the oven at 180 degrees

keep checking it until a knife goes through to the middle easily- then it is cooked perfectly

Pierce with a knife, rub with salt and place in foil. Bake in the oven for 1-1.5 hours

The salt will draw the water out giving a fluffy inside and dry crispy skin.

the choice of potato is important - try a Maris Piper,

give it a few mins in the microwave (if you have one) remembering to use a fork to prod it first.

take out of micro, put some butter on skin (you can add salt/pepper if you want)

and cook on gas mark 5 for approx 25-30 mins

another idea is what they call a "twice bake" (u need a large tatty for this)

Once cooked scoop out the potato, mix with cheese, tuna or whatever you want - replace it all back in again - top with cheese and recook for another 10 mins

I think the proper way is in the oven wrapped in tin foil for about 40 minutes, then 10 mins without, but thats too long for me. I prefer to prick the potato all over, wrap it in lots of kitchen roll and stick in the microwave for 9 minutes. Believe me you wont be dissappointed!

Hi

Wash the potato fully to remove soil etc, keep wet and sprinkle some salt on your hands, rub the salt into the skin of the potato and stab with a fork a few times to break the skin as potato skin does not breathe when cooking (meaning no heat can get inside and cook properly)

Wrap loosely in tinfoil leaving a space at the top fpr air to get in

Heat at 160 deg for 30 minutes, remove from oven, cut a small hole in the potato and fill with a knob of butter (I use garlic butter) and place cut out peice back on, re-wrap and place back in the oven for another 15-20mins same temp

Cooked to perfection.........yummy making me hungry!

(p.s salting the skin gives it a great texture and gorgeous krispy skin)

Lightly brush the potatoes with olive oil before cooking for really crunchy skins
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Scrub the potato and prick it with a fork to prevent steam from building up and causing the potato to explode in your oven.
Bake for 1 1/2 hours.

Skewering potatoes with metal skewers help potatoes to cook all the way through properly and reasonably quickly

Wrap in foil and put it in the oven (180 degrees celcius)

Rub the skin with olive oil that has some sea salt mixed in - this makes the skins roast and turn brown (and taste better). You can also add garlic and herbs.
Then push a metal skewer through the middle- this helps cooks the centre, particularly in large potatoes.
Then put in the top of an oven heated to about 170 degrees for about an hour- check by seeing how easy it is to push another skewer through the potato.
They will cook slightly quicker in metal trays, particularly at the edges.

you can use the oven but it takes about hour and a half to get a perfect tatty, i use the microwave, 5 minutes to start cooking it, then rub salt into the skin, put it back in the micro to finish cooking it, time will depend on how big it is. the salt will give you the crispy oven effect in a shorter time. you can always put them in the oven after on low just to keep warm untill you are ready to eat it.

pre heat the oven.. its gotta be HOT HOT HOT

you can pierce, skewer(metal) or score the skins..

you could rub them with salt.. but if the ovens hot enough.. the skin will crisp..

dont cover them up at all...bake in the oven in their skins only.
and dont microwave... thats the worst thing you could do..

Wrap in kitchen foil then put it in the oven at about gas mark 6 (180-200 degrees), then put it in the oven for approx one hour. Don't take out until you can easily put a knife through it xx

I got one in the oven as we speak a jacket potato that is!!!!

pre warm the oven better if it is gas
wash the potato
take a fork [be care full] prick the potato all over
sprinkle with salt
put in oven
keep checking that it is cooked
take out cut open and add butter

I put mine in the microwave on a special jacket potato rack I bought until soft, then I rub salt and butter on and put under a hot grill til brown and crispy.
This is the quickest way if you are in a rush.
