Answers:
I pay roughly $4 per gram for saffron. That equates to over $1792 per pound. I'd say that's pretty expensive. It's a good thing that a little bit goes a long way.

Are you asking what the most expensive food is?

Probably caviar or Kobe beef.

Are you asking what's the most expensive food in the world, or the most expensive we've ever had?

If it's the first, I would be some kind of truffle or beluga caviar. But the most expensive ingredient you can buy is saffron (which gram for gram is the most expensive food item you can buy).

If it's the second I would have to say Kobe beef. I had a Kobe steak once that cost over $200 but it was absolutely delicious. Granted at that price it better have been or I would have killed the chef.

The most expensive thing we eat is saffron, a seasoning that costs more than gold, pound for pound.
