Is it ok to eat a frozen meal thats past its sell by date?!

Question:

Is it ok to eat a frozen meal thats past its sell by date?

The best before date of my frozen bolognese bake is back in december....but as I froze it will it be ok to eat?!

Answers:
yeah, as long as it's frozen

As long as it was frozen before the end of date.

It is up to you, just see if it smells ok when it is cooked though i think i might get some thumbs down for this. i would eat it if it smells fine and it stayed frozen all the time.

check the end of date on packet some only last 3 months

well health and safety would say no but defrost if it looks and smells ok eat it if not sling it out . PS. keep the local hospital no near by just in case of food poisoning

Yes its fine - the date is just an approximate date I have
worked in a grocery store for years and talk to many
vendors about date issue problems.

yep it will be ok

depends how long it has been out of date.. a few days or so then yeah no problem.. months then no don't do it.

Bacteria cannot survive in freezing temperatures so it will be safe to eat. I cooked a meal which was a year old and no problems.

Ahh
how many times
It is frozen start counting when it thaws.
People buy sides of beef and feeze it for the whole year.

I think it is determined by the type of freezer you have. They have ratings: -

' * ' will keep frozen food safely for 1 week (-6C)
' * * ' will keep frozen food safely for 1 month (-12C)
' * * * ' will keep frozen food safely for 3 months (-18C)
' * * * * ' will keep frozen food safely - longer term. (-18C)

This relates directly to how cold the freezer becomes. -18 degrees C is the lowest and food should keep safely as long as it was brought home promptly from the shop and placed in the freezer immediately.

So for something frozen in December, it should really have been eaten in March unless you have a 4-star rating.

You'll know when you defrost it thoroughly if it smells fresh enough to cook. If you are in any doubt, throw it away.

"Best Before" is regarded as a suggestion of when you can expect to enjoy the meal at its best. By now the flavour that you may have enjoyed could have diminished somewhat and while it may do you no harm, you may not want to try it again.

"Use By" is regarded as an absolute threshold and food should not be consumed after this date has passed.

The decision is yours.

I've included a link to the Freezer Star Rating information below.

yes it will be ok cause it has been frozen but u have to us frozen food a mounth after its sell by date

If it has been kept frozen it should be okay. It is possible that it may have a lost some of its nutritional value due to aging, but as far as safety, it will be fine.
