Why are pork pies sometimes called growlers?!

Why are pork pies sometimes called growlers?


Answers:
where i come from `growler` means something else.
If a man was to ask my wife to show him her growler, id kick his head in!!!!

maybe the piglet inside the pastry is still alive

and growling

Maybe cuz wanting one makes your stomach growl

It's a Yorkshire term, though not sure what it means. I like the idea that it stops your stomach from growling, but different people have different ideas on the etymology.

I've only heard 'em called growlers in Liverpool...
