Looking for a great Indian cookbook -?!

Question:

Looking for a great Indian cookbook -?

I'm originally from the UK (which boasts the best Indian food, second to India only) and I'd like a good cookbook but don't have any currently. I know that in the UK, Madhur Jaffrey is synonymous with Indian cuisine, but what about a book called The Curry House? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answers:
Madhur Jaffrey,baaa,

The books by Miridula Baljekar are superb.

You could also go to www. recipezaar.com look up Indian curries, Sri Lankan curries. Etc. Etc.

Indian curries are more complex the those from Sri lanka, but for all that the Sri Lankan ones are wonderful, if hotter.

I post recipes almost everyday (curries) that is, you could email me for anything special.

I would be pleased to help. I would send photographs of the dish if I have them.

I am compiling a curry cookbook at the moment. I have lived in India (Ceylon) Sri Lanka, Singapore and have thousands of recipes from the east.

I hope that this helps.

P.s. I live in Spain but lived in Kent for years.

I would recommend starting with Madhur Jaffrey's "Quick and Easy Indian Cooking". I own 4 Indian cookbooks, and this is the one I use a lot.

Hi Siobhan, thanks for your note. Here's a clutch of pretty special stuff which may suit your requirements. I take Madhur Jaffrey for granted, her work as a whole being excellent as a starting point, so I've just highlighted two of hers which don't always get the credit they deserve.

First a big timeless classic: Mrs Balbir Singh's 'Indian Cookery' of 1961. Often not that easy to find (it may amuse you to know it was originally published by Mills & Boon ), but here's a gaggle of them at AbeBooks:

The two Madhur Jaffrey 'bibles', World Vegetarian Cooking, and The Curry Bible:

Vivek Singh & Iqbal Wahhab, of the Cinnamon Club in London, with a trio of darn special stuff:

New Indian Cooking

The Cinnamon Club Cookbook

Then a wideranging anthology, Curry Cuisine, just recently published, which covers curry in all its guises world wide, with a roll-call of heavyweights taking care of specific regions:

N.India -- Vivek Singh
S. India -- Das Sreedharan
Pakistan -- Mahmood Akbar
Myanmar & Maritime -- Sri Owen
Thailand -- David Thompson
Mainland SE Asia -- Corinne Trang
Africa -- Roopa Gulati
Caribbean -- Judy Bastyra
Britain -- Roopa Gulati
Japan -- Yasuko Fukuoaka

Finally, one of the finest spice masters working anywhere right now, and the first to capture a Michelin star, from India, working in London: Atul Kochhar

Indian Essence

Simply Indian

There are a huge number more I could mention, but just to cover the ground, The India Club, in the US, imports Indian english language publications of detailed treatments of the regional cuisines in India and surrounding regions:

All the best.
