My friend's mom works at a bakery that has the soft sugar cookies (like the ones at wal mart) and she gave me the recipe and i make them all the time. they are soooo good! hope you try this recipe!!!

COOKIE
INGREDIENTS

* 1/2 cup shortening
* 1 cup packed brown sugar
* 1 egg
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/4 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla thoroughly. Blend flour, soda and salt; stir in.
2. Form into roll 2 1/2" across. Wrap in waxed paper. Chill until firm.
3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
4. With a thin sharp knife, slice 1/8 inch thick. Place a little apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.

FROSTING
INGREDIENTS

* 1/2 cup shortening
* 1/2 cup butter, softened
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 4 cups confectioners' sugar
* 2 tablespoons milk

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, shortening, and vanilla. Blend in the sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the milk, and continue mixing until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered until ready to decorate.

*When you need to add coloring to icing, use color paste. If you use liquid coloring, you may need to add more confectioner's sugar.

Sift together in large bowl:

3 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Add:

1/2 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla or nutmeg

Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes.

Add:

1/2 cup thick sour cream
sifted flour mixture

Preheat oven to 375-400F degrees.
Beat at low speed until well blended (1 1/2 minutes). Roll out lightly on floured board to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut and sprinkle with sugar.

Put on prepared cookie sheet. Dot a raisin in the middle and bake about 12 minutes at 375-400 degrees.

hope that helps =)

I have the BEST sugar cookie recipe of all time. My 7 year old daughter absolutely loves these. I hadn't made them in a while and made them a few weeks ago and as my daughter was taking a bite out of one, she said "Mmmmmm, just like old times!!!", and she's only 7 years old. So, they are gooood. Here's the recipe. (that first one sounds a little odd to me, and I've been cooking for many years) This recipe makes quite a few cookies, but, trust me, they won't last long, and they also freeze well and taste just as good as they do fresh. They aren't frosted, but you could put a powdered sugar frosting on if you wish. Good luck and ENJOY!

1 cup butter (MUST USE BUTTER)
1 cup crisco
1 cup white sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
2 eggs
4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla (can use lemon extract if you wish)

1. Cream butter, crisco, powdered sugar and white sugar together.
2. Add eggs.
3. Add flour, soda and cream of tartar
4. Add vanilla
5. Roll into balls and flatten slightly with a glass that has been dipped in sugar. I use a regular sized cookie scoop to make my balls instead of rolling them into balls, I just scoop them onto my pan, works alot easier.
6. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 8-11 minutes at 350 degrees.

The cookies will be done in probably 10 minutes and do not get too brown around the egdes. Good luck and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
